Sneak Peek:Ultimate Spider-Man

Published on August 3rd, 2011

Brian Michael Bendis made waves a couple months ago by killing the Peter Parker/Spider-Man of the Ultimate Marvel Universe. He’s not in a coma, or another dimension, or bouncing around throughout history, Peter Parker is dead. So who’s this new Ultimate Spider-Man that Marvel is teasing?

After the announcement of Ultimate Spidey’s death (but before the death itself), Marvel started advertising the relaunch of Ultimate Spider-Man at number 1 with an all new Spider-Man wearing a redesigned suit. But, the identity of this new wall crawler has remained a mystery, until now! According to Bendis in a recent interview with, the new Spider-Man is a half Hispanic, half African-American teenager named Miles Morales. “The theme is the same: with great power comes great responsibility,” says Bendis. “He’s going to learn that. Then he has to figure out what that means.

Among the reasons Bendis had to make the new Spider-Man a minority character was the movement last year by actor Donald Glover to be cast as Spider-Man in the upcoming film. “He looked fantastic!” Bendis said of Glover’s unofficial audition. “I saw him in the costume and thought, ‘I would like to read that book.’ So I was glad I was writing that book.” Glover was endorsed not only by Bendis, but Spider-Man co-creator, Stan “The Man” Lee himself! The role ultimately went to Andrew Garfield.

Bendis commented further on casting an African-American/Hispanic Spider-Man. “It’s certainly long overdue. Even though there’s some amazing African-American and minority characters bouncing around in all the superhero universes, it’s still crazy lopsided.” The debut of Miles Morales will be in Ultimate Fallout #4, available today.  If all this death and recasting doesn’t quite butter your bread, the classic Peter Parker/Spider-Man is still alive and well in the regular Marvel Universe.  His exploits can be enjoyed in The Amazing Spider-Man.
