Sneak Peek: Marvel’s Fear Itself

Published on December 21st, 2010

Have you guys been checking out all those ads in Marvel Comics lately? What’s going on with all this fear stuff? At first I figured it had something to with Daredevil and Black Panther, but Marvel just posted their press conference today giving us a little hint of what’s going on. Fear Itself is going to be Marvel’s new storyline that starts this April and is guaranteed to shake up everything we know.

For the last week or so Marvel’s been giving us some teaser images featuring Spider-Man, Thor, The Hulk, Cyclops, and Captain America facing their biggest fears. What’s surprising is that you would think Brian Michael Bendis would be the mastermind considering his massive involvement in House of M, Secret Invasion, and Siege. The creative team for this series has writer Matt Fraction (Uncanny X-Men, Thor, Invincible Iron Man) working with artist Stuart Immonen (New Avengers). While I’m really surprised that Bendis isn’t working on this, I am really excited to see Fraction and Immonen work together on a book.

We still don’t know a whole lot about what this storyline is entailing, but from what Fraction is saying in his video (see below) we’re going to have the biggest heroes in the Marvel Universe face their biggest fears that are brought out into the open by the God of Fear. Fraction promises this is going to be the biggest story Marvel has told yet, which is a pretty tall order and I hope he can live up to the hype.

So what does this mean for Marvel? I’m thinking this is a story that’s going to bring down a lot of stuff for our heroes. Maybe Steve Rogers will pick up the shield again, maybe Professor X will take back the X-Men, who knows? We’re just going to have to sit tight and wait for April.

Some other keynotes about Marvel’s the Fear.

Tom Brevoort spoke briefly about the Fear Itself, saying they took last year off from big events so they could work on this year’s big crossover event. According to Brevoort, Fear Itself will be analogous to the Secret Invasion event and as big as the Civil War event.

  • Fear Itself is seven issues and arrives in April 2011.
  • Fear Itself prologue (one-shot) arrives in March 2011 from Ed Brubaker.
  • A guestimate of tie-in titles should be at the same level as Civil War.
  • The God of Fear is a new character that will change everything in the way characters look at themselves, and how readers look at the Marvel Universe.
  • There are some storylines that have already hinted at the Fear Itself storyline in some of the Marvel titles.
  • Brevoort said he believes the series will be $3.99, with the first issue running 45 pages, and the price may even go higher.
  • Quesada believes this event will bring out the best in all their writers.
  • Civil War was about heroes beating the crap out of one another, Fear Itself brings in real world events seen through the eyes of super powered people.
  • Brevoort said it was too early to name all the characters, though Wednesday’s Marvel Solicitations release should reveal much more.
  • Whatever is left of the Fantastic Four will be involved in the event, as will Deadpool.
  • Don’t discount Steve Rogers returning to the Captain America costume and title.
