The Walking Dead goes “Weekly”

thewalkingdeadweekly1It looks like Image has found a new way to market the extremely popular Walking Dead series. Due to the highly anticipated TV show, premiering on AMC, October 31, they are reprinting single issues of the comic.  They aren’t due to hit stores until January 5, 2011, I’m guessing just after the season ends or just in time for the season finally, and continuing every week for the rest of the year. They are being released for $2.99 each and will be called The Walking Dead Weekly. Now, do I think people who have never read the comic but end up loving the show will go out and buy the book? Yes, yes I do. Do I think they will logically, pay $12 before tax for four issues when the first trade is $9.99 for six issues? Not if they value their money.  Here is what Robert Kirkman had to say in Images’ press release,

“Keeping a series like this going year after year is all about creating good jumping-on-points for new readers. And what better way to jump on than with the very first issue? Making this series available in single issue form will make it easier for new fans to jump on board and for old fans to fill in any gaps in their collection.”

While I agree with him, the best way to jump onto a series is with the first issue, I think people want more for their money in today’s economy. Also, I think people who are collecting a full run of this book, and are looking to fill holes in that collection, aren’t going to be satisfied with reprints. As much as I love this series I don’t see this doing as well as Image would like, not when the TPB and Hardcovers have more issues and cost less overall. I also can’t see someone who is new to comics coming into a comic shop, weekly, for a single issue when the TPB’s are available at most book stores.  Sadly, I just don’t see the average, non-comic book reading, tv watcher going out and looking for this in single issue format.

For anyone out there who has no idea what The Walking Dead is about here is what Image had as their short synopsis of issue #1

Starting in this issue, Rick Grimes awakens to a world he’s not prepared for. This small town cop must now fight the forces of the undead while he searches for his missing wife and son. This is the issue that started it all!
