PART: 1  THE HELL THAT IS WAR!

Well San Diego Comic Con ’09 has come and gone, and we saw lots of news coming out of this years Con… unfortunately most of it had absaloutly NOTHING TO DO WITH THE COMIC INDUSTRY!! There. It had to be said, and who better to say it then your one and only Comic Film Snob! I get that they have to put money in the pot so the comic related stuff can actually pay off, but man oh man… Twilight???! Really? WTF!? Does that have to do with the Twilight comic..oh wait there is no Twilight comic! How about throwing us a friggin’ bone and annoucing more casting or plot lines for the Green Lantern film or more on the Avengers film, or hell- how about a Thor pannel!? We got an Iron Man 2 and a Kick Ass pannel and then a swift kick in the ass to move along. Whew… still with me? Ok, good. Now lets cover the best of the rest!!! Starting with Marvel today and then … well, the rest later. Momma always told me to keep them wanting more!

MARVEL STUDIOS

Well Marvel had their  game face on and really put a lot out there on Iron Man 2. I was not even close to getting in on that pannel, but good god I wish I had! Below is a description of what was shown after a Q & A with the cast:

madestark

Cut to: A government court hearing, where Tony is talking with Pepper Potts a few rows behind him. Senator Stern Asks Tony if he posseses a weapon, the ironman weapon. Stark says that its not a weapon, and that technically it’s a high tech prosthesis.

“Its a weapon Mr Stark!

“If your priority was to protect…”

“Well you can forget it!”

“I am Iron Man, the suit and I am one. You can’t have it!”

The Senator calls Rhodey to the stand. Rhodey walks by Stark and tells him he’ll deal with it.

The Senator asks Stark what his point is and Stark responds that his point is “You’re welcome, I’m your nuclear deterrent. I’ve kept the world safe, what more do you want? I tried to play ball with these ass clowns!” The Senator then says “F— you Mr. Stark!”

A montage begins with shots of newspapers and magazines with Stark on the cover. Voice over in a Russian accent, “You come from a family of thieves and butchers…” Shots of Rourke putting together his whiplash suit. A bunch of random shots, including girls dancing in front of a display with the American flag, and Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow kicking ass. Rourke arrives at the race car track in his Whiplash suit. He activates it and the wires light up with electricity as he whips them around. Stark is bloody, in his racing suit, down on the concrete. We see a close-up of Rourke laughing.

Cut to: Iron Man flying through the night air, dodging missiles which explode behind him, as he blasts towards Earth.

The Iron Man 2 logo appears on the screen, along with the music.

Then we get an extra sequence. Rhodey in an air plane hanger. Justin Hammer walks over and asks what this is about and Rhodey says it’s classified. Hammer looks down at a suit, which appears to be Stark’s old Mark II armor. “Is that what I think it is? What can you do for us?” Hammer shows Rhodey a bunch of different weaponry. Rhodey tells Hammer “I think i’ll take it.” “Which one?” “All of it.” Cut to: A shot of War Machine blasting off his guns.

Man. WTF. Marvel is just knocking them out of the park with their films!! Ever since they started making their own properties they have really brought a manner of class and sophistication to the world of comic films. Don’t get me wrong, DC did a wonderful job with the new take on Batman… but Marvel just makes it feel like an extension of the comic. This is why I love the direction they are going in. They are not just making a movie, they are marketing a brand that runs through all of the things you see the word Marvel on. Whew. So did I like what I heard? The answer is yes- 100%. They are even taking exciting small steps on the set, like having a corner in Stark’s garage with old NASA stuff from Tony’s Dad. What could it all mean? Well my guess is we will find out in the Avengers film or the Cap film.

On that note we now come to the news we DO have on the Avengers and Cap films. Please note that this bit of news was forcefully pulled out of Kevin Feige’s mouth in regards to speculations on the Avengers line up. He had this to say:

“I think we know. It’s going to be Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Nick Fury. I think it’s safe to assume that there will be some members of the Hulk universe in the film as well. In terms of the additional, I think Black Widow for sure. S.H.I.E.L.D’s organization for sure. And, again, what’s exciting to me about the Avengers movie are seeing those four characters together and interact with each other.”

invaders_vol_1_8Hmm… interesting… no mention of Hulk specifically… could that be because he will be a rampaging baddie in this film? Only time will tell, but after that clip from Comic Con I CANNOT wait to find out!

Now onto Captain America: The First Avenger….. let me say for the record I am super excited for this film after I read this bit of news. Feige states:

“Setting it in the Marvel version of WWII is going to open it up [to an international audience] in a big way. It’ll actually end up being our most diverse and our most international film. In terms of the cast there’s a group that [Cap] works with that will have an opportunity for much more international casting.”

Now all we have to do is read between the lines there. Cap? Check. WWII? Check. Possible inclusion of the Invaders? Check? So here is what we know: both Sub-Mariner and  The Human Torch are properties owned by FOX , however we know Bucky is going to be in the film which leaves the first Human Torch and  *gasp* Union Jack (and you all know how I feel about Union Jack) up for grabs! If they do go in this direction it would certainly open up the world market for a much more international flavor! Plus UNION JACK!! Ok, ok, now while I may be alone in my love for Union Jack, you have to admit seeing a verion of The Invaders on screen would be pretty cool. Excited yet? God knows I am. I suppose if you step back there is just as much oppertunity for both of these films to go sour as there is for them to be amazing, but well let’s have a little bit of faith that Marvel knows what the hell they are doing!

I certainly do…and having said that I will let you give your brain a rest as I am sure it is spinning out of control with all the cool news it has just ingested!! So stick around for more news as I will be bringing you more from Twighlight Fest….er San Diego Comic Con ’09 in the Comic Film Snob Update Edition!!!
