Comic Film Snob for the week of June 8,2009

Well I am back with more snobbery!!

dicapriospawn1This week we start out with something that made my jaw hit the ground harder than Wilson Fisk falling on his ass!!! Apparently Todd “I roll in cash” McFarlane has plans for a new Spawn movie AND he wants Leonardo DeCaprio in it!! Crazy  right? No, it gets better! On top of that Leo wouldn’t even play the title character because, hey, this is a Todd McFarlane film- great actors line up for this and Leo is just a B Lister! The great and all powerful Todd McFarlane goes on to say “It’s not a big special-effects movie,” says McFarlane, “it’s a character movie, so I could shoot it in 40-50 days and you don’t have to budget that much time.” He even refers to the potential project as a “Godfather-type” movie….. um Wow. Right. Still want more of the foot in mouth disease? McFarlane also states “It’s a big wish, but his dad (Leo’s) was a big fan of underground comic books and he came from that.”  Umm yeahhhhh, cause Spawn is such a big ol’underground book. Shit, I am surprised any comic stores carry such a small little indie book. Maybe John should cover it in one of his Sequential Sundays as it is such a small book. So while I will always love McFarlane’s art work he can be replaced… see artist PAULO SIQUEIRA by someone more level headed and dare I say awesome? Ohh yes, I will.

Speaking of Spiderman (Paulo drew Amazing, stay with me here on this folks) Alfred Molina stated this week that he would love to return as Doc Ock in a Spidey film. I don’t know, I mean I would love to see a Sinister Six movie myself, and we never actually saw The Doc die- we just watched him float away into a dark abyss. So as far as him returning, he has my vote. Certainly couldn’t hurt the franchise worse then an Emo Peter Parker!

In other news Mark Miller stated that he and Matthew Vaughn are pushing through with the next Kick Ass script. We may possibly see a time jump because they are having the same issue that the Potter films are having… attack of the growth spurts. So while the actual comic series isn’t even over he is already into film seven. In a way the Scott Pilgrim books are doing the same thing so you can’t fault the Ass team for it, but it just feels a little premature. Mark Miller has also stated that a few people have already screened some of the footage and feel they are really onto something with this, dare I say, franchise.

Speaking of Vaughn’s it appears Shia LaBeouf is no longer interested in playing the title role for Y the Last Man. Labeouf says “You take Sam and you put a monkey on his shoulder, I don’t know if it’s that big a differential. It seems like he’s the ordinary guy in an extraordinary situation again.” Much like the character of Sam in the Transformers films. He added, “I’m not willing to make that movie currently, and maybe be too old to play the role by the time it does come around.”

Is it just me or is that the role he always plays. It isn’t a bad thing Shia. Don’t knock being the everyman …do you think Tom Hanks goes home and cries at night that he made his career like that? I doubt it.

This week in Ironman 2 news it appears as though people have taken Simon and I’s suggestion, linking the two official release pictures with what the story line might be. Simon said he felt that the story could see Happy (Jon Favreau) racing and then Whiplash shows up and starts some shit to call Tony out. Lets look at the pictures the studio has released.

The first picture has Tony looking at his monitors a bit shocked. Look closer though…………….

Looks a lot like the race track at Monaco Gran Prix when you put them side by side. Then we saw this picture.

It is of course, Whiplash at what looks like…wait for it- a race track. Now lets go back to those monitors that Stark was looking at again.

Wow looks like Stark is looking at what was his chest design on Whiplashes chest!!! Bumm Bummm Bummmmmmm. It would appear that Simon was onto something. What do you fine folks think? Well I am off to be snobby and what not! Enjoy your upcoming week at the water cooler now that you’re caught up on stuff. Or if you don’t go near water coolers, just throw this info out there in general conversation. And if any one asks where you got this coveted news….Tell’em the Comic Film Snob!
