Tattoo of the Month: April 2009

Published on April 10th, 2009

It is that time of the month we talk to a fan that loves comics and Tattoos as they tell us  why they got a part of comic book history ink on to there skin for life. This time it is Hope from  Sheldon’s home state of  Georgia. As she talks about her love of Catwoman.

1.What is your name?
Hope Zacek

2.How old are you and where do you live?
36 years old and I live in Atlanta

3. Do you read comics and if so what do you like to read?
Not very often.  Have read a few graphic novels here and there that I really enjoyed, Persepolis and Maus come to mind.

4. Ok do you have any favorite artist or writers?
Artists, I’m a huge fan of Sally Mann – Photography.  Also like Bruce Holwerda’s work.  Writers, include David Sedaris, Augusten Burroughs,Bukowski, Tom Robbins, Vonnegut, Neil Gaiman, Ayn Rand, Hollis Gillespie, Aldous Huxley, Dorothy Parker.  Just to name a few!

5. All right so what got you into  tattoos?
Hmmm…well started many years ago with my first tattoo of an Egyptian  idol named Bast, pictured on the single for the Spin Doctor’s song Cleopatra’s Cat.  Next was the infamous Catwoman. Have been continuing on with getting tattoos since then, including Medusa, a Japanese arrowhead, a water nymph face from the Sibley sculpture at Atlanta Botanical gardens.  Oh, and a few cat paws meandering here and there…

6. What is your comic book tattoo?
Catwoman from 1993 DC Comics issue #1.  Altered slightly, we gave her better kick ass boots 😉

7. What made you want to get that as your tattoo ?
My former boss gave me the comic and I just loved the image so much and I just went from there. I have a fondness for angry women I guess!

8. How long did it take ?
About 2-3 hours I think.

9. Where did you get it done ?
On my thigh

10. Have you meet any of the artist or writer that your tattoo is base on there work ??
Nope, not yet anyway

11. Do people know about your comic book tattoo ??
Kind of hard to miss.  When I’m wearing shorts or a skirt anyway.

12. What is the funnies thing that has happened to you when people see it?
Shortly after I got Catwoman, I was sitting in the airport in  Columbus , Ohio with my Mom waiting for a flight back toAtlanta.  An older Japanese man was sitting next to us.  He turned to me eventually and said he normally does not care for tattoos but he complimented Catwoman and said it was really great work.  My Mom
got highly annoyed with him and told him not to ‘encourage’ me  hehe!

13. Are you hoping to get more comic book ink ?
Anything is possible… but at the moment considering an art nouveau piece on my lower arms.  Maybe.

14. What do you like to do when you’re not getting tattoos such as where do you work and what kind music you like any thing you want to tell us ?
I work for Turner Broadcasting as a QA Analyst.  That means…basically I break software and then make someone else fix it.  Music taste varies greatly, again I tend to appreciate those angry women 😉 In my free time I watch a lot of films, read my books, daydream about my next house project, hike in the Georgia and NC mountains, go on road trips, frolic with other people’s pets, take way too many photos, visit old cemeteries, listen to music in the park, eat, drink, and be merry with old friends.

Oh, and if you’re interested, my Catwoman tattoo was done by Bryant Mickler back in 1998 or 1999. At the time he was working at psycho tattoo in Sandy Springs,GA.

15. Great do you have a website or a myspace ?
Nope.  Flickr is about the closest thing to my ‘webspace’ I guess and you can find me here.
