What? Another week has gone by? Well, that can only mean it’s time for yet another Pick Of The Week podcast! Ian has the pick this week and he uses it to display his gargantuan man-crush on Robert Kirkman. As always he’s joined by Simon and as never before he’s also joined by a recent addition to Comic Impact, Ken, who fills in this week for Sheldon who’s out interviewing for a job. Psh, a likely story.
It’s a pretty off the wall podcast with discussions ranging from last weeks comics (duh!)...

Never let it be said that Robert Kirkman is a man without ideas. Or a lazy writer. He’s the creative force behind some of the best selling comics around today, from Invincible, to Marvel Zombies, The Walking Dead…the list goes on. Plus, he’s got the forthcoming “Walking Dead” TV show on AMC which has already been approved for a second season in spite of the fact that the first season is 2 months away from its premiere!
That said, last week brought us Science Dog #1 which featured the first...

Pixar Animation Studios has always had a keen eye for finding truly unique and individualistic artistic talents to create visually stunning ways to drive their stories forward. In the highly stylized opening title sequence for their fourth film, Monsters Inc., the notable influence of 1950’s animation began to appear. Of the many talented artists working at the studio, four names are most commonly associated with pushing this distinctive look forward: Lou Romano, Don Shank, Nate Wragg and, last but certainly not least, Scott...

As many of you may or may not know this was my first full Comic Con in 2010. While I saw many things there that realy didn’t affect the world of comics I did see one in particular that blew me away.Obviously I am talking about the Frank Darabont produced AMC show The Walking Dead. I should note that before comic con I had only read issue 1 and was like hmmm ok not bad, but nothing to really pulled me in. Then I saw the footage on the show room floor for comic con and I was blown away! I immediately came home and bought...

Ah 2009, it was a simpler time. A time when Dinosaurs roamed the Earth, and I had never heard of Justin Bieber. It was also the last time ComicImpact had Trade Tuesday. Well guess what boys and girls?! Trade Tuesday is back! And it’s gonna be exactly as you remember it! Except instead of video we’re doing written reviews. But besides that it’s exactly the same! EXACTLY! So get ready because this week I’ll be doing a review of Chew Vol. 1: Taster’s Choice.
I got to be honest when I first heard about Chew I was...

Last weekend at San Diego Comic Con 2010 we got a chance to talk to Multiple Eisner Award winners Fábio Moon and Gabriel Ba.

Look at Haunt and I think somebody took their Spawn and Spider-Man action figures and just smashed them together, but this series is about as far as you can get from those books while still being in the same genre. For those of you who don’t know about this character from Robert Kirkman and Todd McFarlane, Haunt is about a priest named Daniel Kilgore who is linked to his dead brother, Kurt Kilgore and when the two merge they become a superhero. Did I mention that Daniel’s brother was killed because he was a secret...

A recent Comic Impact Twitter notice said, “If you aren’t reading Chew you really need to prioritize your life.” So while we were at Comic Con last weekend we made damn sure to get an interview with the writer/creator of this great comic, John Layman. Take a look see at this video interview where he talks about the Eisner Award that Chew won, the future of the comic, rumors of a live action Chew TV show (dare I dream?) and watch John’s shock at the brevity of our interview time. No we are not going to give you a bailout, but we can tell you some of the exclusives that you may see at Comic Con in just a few days from now.

Are you into comics that have tons of violence, gore, sex and cannibalism but Crossed just doesn’t feel wacky and fun enough and you’re not so much into graphic rape? Then Chew is the book for you my friend!
Chew is about Tony Chu (see what they did there?) who is an FDA agent in a world gone mad where, due to bird flu epidemic, there is a prohibition on chicken and chicken products and the FDA is now one of the most powerful branches of the US government. What makes Tony Chu special is the fact that he is a “cibopath.” ...

Multi Eisner and Harvey Award nominee Ted McKeever is one of a select few comic artists whose talents, though perfectly suited for the sequential art form, are evocative enough of the “fine art” world to guarantee that he could find success and acclaim there as well. He, along with contemporaries like Kent Williams, George Pratt, Bill Sienkiewicz and John J. Muth have the creative flexibility and artistic chops to produce works for multiple outlets of the larger art world. As such, their comic work, particularly titles...

Never in my life have I seen a comic so ridiculous in title, yet quite so exceptional in content. Believe it or not, but this comic had me in fits of laughter for the majority. ‘Sea Bear & Grizzly Shark’… just say it once outloud and you’d think it would fall flat on it’s face in the dirt and have no chance of ever reeling in a single decent review, because it sounds so unbelievably random and stupid. Well, yes. But also, no. I thought it would suck terribly as well, but surprisingly it was the...

Hack/Slash: My First Maniac #1 is the first publication for Tim Seeley’s ‘Hack/Slash’ since it moved to Image Comics from DDP. I have loved Tim’s Hack/Slash series for a while now, and although I have not been following it since it’s beginning, I can tell you that a year or so ago, I did the deed any good fan would and went back and bought both the Hack/Slash omnibuses, of which I have both truly enjoyed!

Around this time last year, I heard about a comic called Chew. It told the story of Tony Chu, an F.D.A Agent who is also a Cibopathic. I know you’ll be asking “what the hell is that?”, well it is someone who gets psychic impressions from whatever they eat. Like a super-powered Cannibal, the first issue was more than impossible to find. Luckily, last year when the first trade came out I got it, and I fall in love with the world that John Layman and Rob Guillory had created.

At the retailer’s summit occurring in Chicago before C2E2 last weekend, Diamond Comics, distributor of weekly comic book issues, floated the idea of moving the release day for comic books to Tuesday, with the comic book retailers paying 5 dollars a week more. They put the idea to a show of hands vote to the retailers in the audience, and Tuesday releases narrowly won out. Now it sounds as if this is all speculation and discussion amongst Diamond.
Why do they want to make comics come out on Tuesdays? Because of Hollywood....

A couple of weeks ago I made a trip to San Francisco for WonderCon and thanks to the Image Comics panel, was introduced to “Turf” a new comic series penned by on-air personality Jonathan Ross, with art from Tommy Lee Edwards. I knew who Ross was but even with him attached to the project I wasn’t immediately sold on picking this book up. Then I saw the cover and learned that “Marvel 1985″ artist Edwards was on the series. The two collaborating was enough to get me cautiously optimistic about the...

It seems the AMC television adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead has found it’s leading man. The role of Rick Grimes has been awarded to English actor Andrew Lincoln. Lincoln hasn’t done much in the United States but was part of the hit British tv show This Life as well as doing many voice-overs for radio and television advertising.

Underground, By Jeff Parker and Steve Lieber, is a prime example of how much value color can add to a book. Underground is a lot like the Cliffhanger or Broken Arrow of comics. Not just in the sense that they all take place in national parks and travel deep inside caves, but in the progression of the story. The way the action unfolds, the kinds of tension used and the dialogue.
If you were a fan of either of those two movies, I would call this series just as fun and remind you that a comic is all in how you look at it. Parker’s...

In 1994 Brian Michael Bendis, a guy most people had never heard of, sat down to write a book that would later be published in a hardcover about the thickness of a Sin City paperback. In a move that shocked absolutely no one, AMC greenlit production of at least one episode of the show based off of Kirkman’s comic. Frank Darabont (Of Shawshank Redemption and Green Mile fame) is basically going to be a one man army, writing, directing and possibly producing the show.

The things that you will see on the pages of a Brandon Graham comic are unusual and daring. The panels are jaggedly laid out across the page, there is writing everywhere, but the world feels so alive. Brandon’s characters feel alive, emotionally and artistically.

After wrapping up the conflict with the Governor and the abandoning of their safe spot, we were all asking the same question. What’s next? Walking Dead isn’t about in your face sadistic violence. It’s not over the top or realistic. It’s an exploration into human depravity, that which makes us tick at the basest levels. In a lot of ways, what’s implied behind the violence is worse than the violence itself.

So, now that AMC (The channel, not the theater) has picked up the rights to one of the hottest Image titles around, It’s time for “teh inter-tubes” to collectively speculate on the whole situation, so here are my two cents…
