It is that time of the month, when you pay your rent and your phone bill, but it is also the time to look back at some of the best covers from that past month. My favorite was American Vampire: Survival of the Fittest #5 by Sean Murphy for more check out Episode 230 of the Pick of The Week

Courtesy of Variety. Today news broke that Ed Brubaker will be adapting the big screen his noir/crime comic Coward for Jamie Patricof’s Hunting Lane Films. Coward is the first volume of the amazing comic series, Criminal. Director David Slade is set to direct.
Slade is also set to direct Fox’s Daredevil reboot it is not know if that will effect that projects schedule. I love that Brubaker is getting to adapt his own work. Just last month I said that Drive, starring Ryan Gosling, would be the closest we would get...

Courtesy of CBR.This week Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons announced their new project, The Secret Service. No story details were released at this time but ever the consummate salesman Millar promised an extensive interview and preview in the November issue of his magazine, Clint. As is his standard M.O. Millar is auctioning off the right to name the super villain of the book to raise money for charity. This time it is for his primary school St Bartholomew’s Primary School Pantomime Fund.
Matthew Vaughn has already purchased...

Kick-Ass 2 #3 has finally been released and I was starting to think I would never see it. We know that Mark Millar has decided that he will solely focus on his own creations as far as comic books go, but with John Romita Jr. being so busy with his art duties on The Avengers, I didn’t think we would see a new issue of Kick Ass for quite some time. Don’t get me wrong, I’m more than happy to see this issue, I’m just shocked that it happened.
Now, since it has been so long since we saw the second issue, I...

Courtesy of the Chicago Sun-Times, we get 0ur first look at Christian Walker in FX’s Powers pilot. Despite not necessarily being me first choice, Patric definitely looks the part.
The article mainly focuses on the show filming in Chicago and how it incorporated the city as a character. We do gleam a few interesting anecdotes and information. If the series is picked up it, which it’s looking very possible, it will air next June. When describing the show executive producer and writer Chic Eglee called it, “a mashup...

It’s a sad day for any fan of Mark Millar’s work at Marvel comics. Last week, Millar announced that he had just finished writing his last story for Marvel and will now be writing his Millarworld stories full-time. So, if you’ve been a fan of stuff like Old Man Logan, Ultimates 1, Ultimates 2, Civil War, and Ultimate X-Men, you’re probably not too happy.
On a positive note, Millar has a bunch of stuff he’s working on for Millarworld. Including: Kick Ass 2, Superior, Nemesis and the recently announced...

Fans of the ultra-violent and ultra-awesome Kick-Ass will be pleased to hear that writer/creator Mark Millar has announced an upcoming spin-off featuring Hit-Girl!
In a Comic Book Resources exclusive, Millar talks about the upcoming spin-off which is apparently an ongoing series, with art by Leandro Fernandez. There is no word yet as to when the first issue of this series will be released.
Millar said to CBR, “This is Hit Girl in her own ongoing book because I found that as I was writing the ‘Kick-Ass’ comic,...

For this latest edition of Trade Tuesday, I’ve decided to focus on a book that I’ve wanted to do for quite some time. Mostly because it’s an Ed Brubaker book and everything he writes is pure awesome, especially this book. In case you couldn’t figure it out from the headline, the book I’m referring to is, Criminal Vol. 1: Coward. The art is done by Sean Phillips, who has done all the Criminal books and also does Incognito with Mr. Brubaker.
If you haven’t read any of the Criminal books, you...

Scarlet is a small story that is meant to go very big. So far, we have seen greed and corruption take place in the town of Portland, Oregon. Scarlet was shot and seemed to wake up a changed woman who is hell bent on not only exposing the crooked cops but also the broken system in which they thrived. Scarlet #5 is the last of the first arc written by Brian Micheal Bendis and drawn by Alex Maleev. Did the promises made at last years C2E2 come to fruition, or will we have to send Scarlet after Bendis and Maleev? Read on to find...

The boast made on the cover of Kick-Ass 2 #2 reads, “Warning: This book contains greatness!” Does the book live up to it’s promise? Keep reading to find out!
Kick-Ass 2 #2 is written by Mark Millar with art by John Romita Jr. This is the continuation of the story of Kick-Ass, the worlds first, real-life superhero. Kick-Ass doesn’t have any superpowers, or a cool origin, he’s just a regular kid from the ‘burbs who decided that he was going to become a superhero. One wetsuit, a mask...

Mark Millar is at the top of his game this week. Two amazing books from the guy in one week! I thought only Robert Kirkman was capable of such a thing. It took a little bit longer to get to four issues of Nemesis than someone would expect, but I think with this last issue was worth the wait. Honestly I wasn’t as impressed with this book initially as I have been with Millar’s other books, but I think after looking at this first series as a whole, and especially this last issue I’m more than happy with it.
So...

Whew man I just got through reading all my books this week and soooo many stuck out!! Loved Fantastic Four & Secret Avengers as well as Incognito and of course Superior. What a way to to start closing out the year! With just one week left I wonder how the next set will top this? I am sure you are wondering how good Superior #3 written by Mark Millar and drawn beautifully I might add by Leinil Francis Yu. Read on to find out.
Before I get to deep into my review of Superior I would like to say a few things about Marvels creator...

Normally it goes about three or four months between Mark Millar’s books, so I was more than surprised to see Superior #2 out on the shelf this week. Don’t get me wrong I was quite happy to see the book after only a month or so, it was just very surprising.
If you didn’t read the first issue, or read Simon’s review on the first issue, or listen to the POW Podcast where we couldn’t stop laughing for twenty minutes (shame on you) Superior is about a young boy named Simon with multiple sclerosis who...

When last we saw Scarlet she was kinda busy enacting revenge on the crooked cop that murdered her boyfriend and turned her world upside down. This creator owned title put out under Marvels Icon books promises us that we will see a new American Revolution take place in this book. Did Bendis and Maleev make it happen in this issue? Read on to find out!
In this issue Scarlet doesn’t really talk to us the reader as much as she has in previous books as she is pretty busy dealing with the out come of her actions. Having...

Ed Brubaker is one of the biggest names in comic books right now, and there’s a reason for it. The guy writes awesome comics. The guy is writing Captain America, and Secret Avengers, plus he just finished up the Steve Rogers: Super Soldier mini-series. But now it’s time for him to return to his Pulp Comic, Incognito and I couldn’t be more excited for it. If you haven’t read the first trade I highly recommend it, that’s the book that really got me into Ed Brubaker’s stuff. And let’s not...

Being completely amazed by the first series of Mark Millar’s ‘Kick-Ass’, and feeling terribly disappointed with the awful Matthew Vaughn film adaptation, I was not sure what to think with the second series of the booming ‘Kick-Ass’ franchise. Had Mark Millar been influenced by the film adaptation to an extent that would make him alter the story for the sake of another movie, or to please the movie fans? This was the main question hanging over my conscious whilst I was walking home from the comic...

Before I start my review of this book, let me just say I have a love/hate relationship with Mark Millar’s comics. I hate the delays on his books and 98% of the time I love the story he is telling us and I am just like a kid on Christmas. Like I recall buying ‘Kick-Ass/Wolverine: Old Man Logan’ when it was coming out, but it took over a year to come out.
That’s why I told myself with ‘Nemesis’, I’ll read the first one and if I’m not in love it with it I’ll just wait and buy...

I know what you’re thinking: How in the world am I supposed to be expected to keep on living like this without a new POW Podcast? Well, fear not my friends because another Comic Impact Pick Of The Week Podcast is here to save your life from the horrible grasp of mediocrity.
Sadly, Sheldon is once again out, but, this time it has ostensibly nothing to do with a new job and everything to do with a killer migraine. So Simon, Ken and Ian take their places as your guides through the strange and frightening world of last...

Hey come on did you really think you would get out reading a review of Icon’s Scarlet issue 2 by me (Sheldon) this week? As you know from issue one I happened to fall in love with this book. Both the writing (Bendis) and the art (Maleev) are perfect in tone for this book! When last we left our heroine she was telling us of her stories of woe and had just informed us as to the how’s and whys that set her on this path.Does issue 2 live up to the incredible promise this book has? Well keep reading and you will find...

You’ll know their work from such books as ‘Casanova’ and ‘Umbrella Academy’, also their latest comic Daytripper, which has been talked about on a lot of the our POW podcasts and has even been our pick of the week. We got the chance to talk to Fábio Moon and Gabriel Ba about the future of Casanova and Umbrella Academy, and to ask how Daytripper will end. So join us as we...

Alone, broken and out for justice no matter how big or small the crime is…that is how Scarlet, written by Brian Michael Bendis and drawn by Alex Maleev starts and it promises big, BIG things! I first heard about Scarlet when every one else did around C2E2. The idea as I remember it was promised to start out small and very personal and then get VERY BIG fast, kicking off a new American Revolutionary War ofsorts. Before I get to far into the review please know that this is not a statement on my political views but more of...

We love Matt Fraction’s ‘Casanova‘ series here at Comic Impact. We picked the first collected volume titled ‘Luxuria’ as one of our Book Of The Month’s a while back (if you do not know what the story is, just download the podcast in the link), and recommended that those of you who had not read it should make it a top priority to check out. Well, if you never got the chance to read it first time around, then this is your second chance! No excuses this time folks!

This is becoming less unordinary these days by simply going to your local comic shop you can find one of these handy dandy stamps on the cover of your favorite book and more then likely the next hit movie. You know the stamp I mean. The one that reads now a major motion picture. As of the last few years we have seen some unlikely titles like Wanted,Hellboy,Kick Ass,Watchmen,300,and now the recently announced Incognito. I am sure before I’ve even finished writing this article they will announce another new title coming!...

This weekend brought lots of fun news from Marvel,DC,Image and Boom Studios out of C2E2 or as I like to call it “The Con that I wasn’t able to attend.”. But I am not bitter about it no, no I will continue on like Greg House limping along and taking my Vicodin that is the Internet to get me through my days so that I can bring you ungrateful readers all the news. The things I do for you people.Honestly.
So why are you still here? Oh right the news! This could be a long one so you might want to clear your schedule...

This past weekend I was in Las Vegas for a wedding. I was walking around the Planet Hollywood Casino and I saw something that caught my eye, a Kick-Ass sweater. I told my self ” wow that’s kind of cool. If is under $50.00 I will buy it since I love the book and I am a Mark Millar and John Romita Jr fan and I know that film is going to kick ass since I saw a screener back in August of last year. ” Yeah that’s how my brain works sometime .
I look at the tag and I saw $98.99 or something like that....

Now that 2010 is in full swing I’d like to wish all of our Comic Impact readers all the best in the new year and charge right back into my Best of 2009 list. Up, up and away we go….
Criminal The Deluxe Edition by Ed Brubaker, Sean Phillips and Val Staples (Marvel/Icon)
It comes as no surprise that Ed Brubaker can write a great crime comic. What does come as a surprise is that any wirier, even one as talented as Brubaker, can take the crime/noir genre and make it feel so fresh and invigorating that it’s almost...

I was lucky enough to see a screening of this film with Comic Impact staff members, Rich and Dana and we all agreed that this movie lived up to the amazing book that it is base on.
Don’t ask me when the next issue of Kick Ass is coming out. But I can tell you from the screening we saw you will fall in love with Hit-Girl I know we all did. She is the star of the film.
The story of Kick-Ass goes something like this: comic book fanboy Dave Lizewski decides to become a hero to save New York city from the real bad guys- street...

This film stars Nicolas Cage (Big Daddy), Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Red Mist), Aaron Johnson (Dave Lizewski a.k.a Kick-Ass), and Chloe Moretz (Hit-Girl). The film is due out sometime in 2010.
