Brian Michael Bendis made waves a couple months ago by killing the Peter Parker/Spider-Man of the Ultimate Marvel Universe. He’s not in a coma, or another dimension, or bouncing around throughout history, Peter Parker is dead. So who’s this new Ultimate Spider-Man that Marvel is teasing?
After the announcement of Ultimate Spidey’s death (but before the death itself), Marvel started advertising the relaunch of Ultimate Spider-Man at number 1 with an all new Spider-Man wearing a redesigned suit. But, the...

We’ve been inundated lately by tie-in books from both Marvel and DC. DC’s FlashPoint has generated a ton of mini-series tie-ins, whereas Marvel’s Fear Itself has created both mini-series tie-ins as well as infiltrating currently running books. One of those Marvel books is The Avengers #15!
Written by Brian Michael Bendis with art by Chris Bachalo, The Avengers #15 is now the third issue of the series to be a Fear Itself tie-in. In the main Fear Itself title, seven mystical, Asgardian hammers have fallen...

It’s been four long years since the last, disappointing, installment of the Spider-Man film franchise and next summer not only marks the 50th anniversary of the wall-crawler’s comic debut in Amazing Fantasy #15, it’s bringing the film that promises to return Spidey to his roots, The Amazing Spider-Man!
Today, news hit the web (no pun intended) that the first trailer for the Marc Webb (again, not a pun) directed reboot will debut next week with selected screenings of Captain America: The First Avenger. Reports indicate that...

Looking for a great, fun read with fantastic art that requires almost zero backstory but has some of the most talented creators in the industry? Then look look no further than Rocketeer Adventures #2!
Rocketeer Adventures is a four part mini-series that carries on the iconic character created by Dave Stevens in 1982. The end of an era is on your comic shelves this week. Today marks the release of Ultimate Spider-Man #160 and the death of the Ultimate Marvel Universe’s Peter Parker.
Some have speculated that this death, which was announced several months ago, would result in a stereotypical comic book “fake out death,” in which Peter doesn’t really die, but Ultimate Spider-Man writer Brian Michael Bendis (who has consistently written Ultimate Spider-Man since issue #1 in 2000) has said that at the end of Ultimate...

Since the creation of superheroes in the late 1930’s, Hollywood has been more than aware of their marketing potential. From the old Superman, Batman and Captain America serials played at movie theaters in the 1940’s, to the George Reeves Superman and Adam West Batman TV shows, all the way to the comic book movie boom of the new millennium, superheroes have made quite an impact on the world of film and television.
Now, the big screen comic mistakes have been pretty obvious and hard to hide. But over the years,...

So, another week has come and gone and with it comes an all new POW, Pick of The Week podcast. You’ve found your way here, so you must be at least mildly curious as to what mysterious wonders are to be had on this week’s podcast. Why not take a load off and listen? It’d be a considerably wise decision.
This week, Ian has the pick and he’s joined by Ken and Simon. Our fearless comic-philes let you know exactly what to read and what to stay away from for the week of March 23rd. Ian picked Ultimate...

It’s always sad when a really great book is rife with scheduling delays. But, there are differing schools of thought on the matter. By allowing the creator/creators the time they need to craft their art, it ultimately yields a superior final product.
Written and drawn by David Finch, Batman: The Dark Knight #2 came out this week. Batman: The Dark Knight is a new book focusing on Bruce Wayne as Batman instead of Dick Grayson. Instead of the international tone that Batman Inc., the other book that features on Bruce,...

Speculation has been crazy over the past few months as to who will portray Lois Lane in Zack Snyder’s upcoming Superman reboot, Superman: Man of Steel. Names such as Natalie Portman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and even Twilight’s Kristen Stewart have been rumored to be in the running for the role.
Yesterday, the LA Times’ Hero Complex provided confirmation that Academy-Award nominee, Amy Adams will be playing Lois Lane in the upcoming superhero reboot. Adams will be joined by Henry Cavill in the title role...

It hasn’t even hit it’s 20th issue yet, but Image Comics’ Chew is the next in line for a small screen adaptation.
It was reported by Deadline today that Chew will be featured on Showtime as “a quirky half-hour cop show.” It will be directed and executive produced by Stephen Hopkins who comes from Circle of Confusion, the company that brought us AMC’s hit comic adaptation, The Walking Dead. The script for this adaptation was written by Terri Hughes Burton and Ron Milbauer (Eureka), and the...

I wonder sometimes if MARVEL has a time machine and goes into the future to see what will be going on in the world. In the past week we have seen the tragedy in Japan and now the U.N. is taking actions against Colonel Gadhafi in Libya. It would seem that Marvels Fear Itself event is timed perfectly for this, which is why the P.O.W. for March 16th is Fear Itself: Prologue Book of the Skull , One -Shot. It is a long title but a great book written by Ed Brubaker and drawn by Scot Eaton.
After being terrified of world events, the...

Let’s face it, Superman is over 70 years old! He was created in a time when people were still saying, “Now, hold on! That Hitler guy’s not ALL bad!” It can be a bit of a chore to take a character that predates the polio vaccine and make him relevant to today’s world.
That said, today we’re going to take a look at some of the worst offenders in the crazed attempts that some creators have made for relevance and modern “hipness.”
Wonder Woman
Poor Wonder Woman has had it kind...

It has been almost ten issues since writer Dan Slott came on board Amazing Spider-Man and revolutionized the title, taking it out of the long, tired slump it was in during the “Brand New Day” event and breathing new life into the wall crawler with “Big Time.”
Since Slott became the full time writer of this book, it has had a different artist and a new mini-story arc every three issues. Marcos Martin is the current artist in Amazing Spider-Man #656, his second issue with one left to go. Issue #656 is...

With the movie rights to the Daredevil franchise, currently held by 20th Century Fox, about to run out and return to Marvel/Disney, Fox has apparently managed to secure the future of the franchise at the 11th hour.
According to Variety’s Rachel Abrams, Fox will be hiring David Slade to direct the next Daredevil movie. The current trend with superhero movies has been to do complete reboots, but this new film will apparently be a continuation of 2003’s Daredevil, starring Ben Affleck and directed by Mark Steven Johnson.

As times change, so do standards of decency. What may have been a perfectly acceptable joke or caricature in bygone years of comic books may not be the most tolerant of story ideas today.
We’ve all seen the big lipped, big eyed, Minstrel Show-esque stereotypes of black people that ran rampant in the golden age of comics. Much debate has been made over Ebony White, the young, street-wise associate/sidekick of Will Eisner’s The Spirit. There are the obvious complaints about his “black-face” appearance...

One of the complaints directed at some of the few surviving Golden Age characters is their lack of modern grittiness/realism and over abundance of bubbly exuberance. One such case is Steve Rogers, Captain America, but thanks to the Ultimate Marvel Universe, we get to see a much harder edged Cap than we’re used to.
Ultimate Captain America is written by Jason Aaron with art by Ron Garney. It is the first solo series that Captain America has had in the Ultimate Marvel Universe since its creation in 2000/2001. Ultimate...
