As we enter mid-January and 2011 becomes more and more of a memory, I’d like to close out my look at the most notable releases of the past year so that those who may have missed the following can seek them out, or those who have read these be reminded that they are very worthy of a second (or third) read. So, without further ado let’s begin with…

As 2011 comes to a close, I can say with a bit of relief that the amount of quality content being published within the world of comics continues to increase steadily. The interest in recent years in high-end, lavish, oversized archival editions and spiffy comic related art books signifies that people are not just reading comics for their obvious entertainment value, but also seeing the medium more and more as the valid literary and artistic arena it’s been since day one. As such I’ve assembled a list of 2011’s...

Hi Everyone. Matt here, giving you the comic news of the week in this installment of The Impact.
Marvel Reveals The Mighty.
Originally teased back in early July, Marvel revealed the identities of the “The Mighty” who will make their first appearance in Fear Itself #7. This will be the final issue before the three issues that launch the 12 part miniseries that will launch the new “Shattered Heroes” status quo for the Marvel Universe. Now all sarcasm about Fear Itself”s length aside, I do kinda...

Last week there was a new Previews Magazine from Diamond Comics, so it’s time for Looking Forward September 2011
In case you’re not sure, Previews is the official magazine retailers use to order comics. Now, what you may not know is that the solicitations in Previews will come out two months before the release date. This time, we are going to look at the comics coming out in September, 2011. That is why this article is called,”Looking Forward, September 2011.” Please note, this not the full magazine. This only what...

AH! What a lovely day for blood and terror. I feel like “June Gloom” is a missed opportunity for a lot of horror to be watched and read. It has an added benefit of the sun breaking through, much the way it does at the end of a vampire or monster movie, providing the main characters with hope. Personally, I find it adds to the kitsch factor, which is not always a bad thing. Sometimes clichés are clichés for a reason. Welcome to Horror on the 13th – the “June Gloom” edition! Once again, I’m forced to choose between...

You want to know what book is almost always worth the price tag? HELLBOY! Mike Mignola’s big, red monkey from Hell does many things, but disappointing readers isn’t one of them.
Hellboy: The Fury #1 came out this week, written by Mignola with art by Duncan Fegredo. This story is a long time coming, after such previous Hellboy stories as Hellboy: The Storm. While The Fury is a mini-series that is basically already in the middle of a story after the previous stories, the first two pages of issue #1 catch the...

Honestly, I had no intention of writing a review for this book when I picked it up. I thought since there was a Trade Tuesday featuring Axe Cop Volume 1 less than a month ago and a Wizard World Anaheim video interview from Ethan Nicolle (the artist), doing a review on this latest issue might be a bit much. Reading this book literally brought me to tears. That six-year old kid who wrote this truly outdid himself on this book. Bravo, Malachai Nicolle, you make Shakespeare look like a hack! It’s one of the funniest things...

It only takes one good idea and Axe Cop may be the greatest idea to ever come to fruition. Axe Cop started out as a web series comic drawn by Ethan Nicolle and written by his (at the time it started) five year old brother, Malachai Nicolle. That’s right, this amazing comic is written by a five year old boy. Over the last year and a half this comic has gone from a fun little web comic to a full-length three issue miniseries published by Dark Horse Comics. ComicImpact founder, Simon gave me the first issue of the new mini-series...

The more I read, the more I get into reading about the adventures of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. In this latest book, B.P.R.D.: The Dead Remembered, we join little Liz Sherman on what is her first mission with the B.P.R.D. in 1976. Up to this point, we have known that Liz is a pyrokinetic who, at the age of 11, lost control of her powers and destroyed an entire city block. This accident killed thirty-two people, including her parents and brother. After the accident she became a ward of the B.P.R.D. in hopes...

2011 marks the 25th anniversary of San Francisco’s WonderCon and the convention’s growth, particularly within the last few years, has been remarkable to say the least. When I first began attending in the late 90’s the convention was held across the Bay in Oakland (then its home since its inception in 1987) and was still a moderately low-key affair. With its move to the Moscone Center in 2003, attendance has grown steadily with every passing year. Most astounding is the jump from last year’s head count...

“There are few artists working in the realm of popular entertainment who deserve to be called Renaissance Men. Ladies and gentleman, I give you Mark Nelson“. These words, written by Mark (Xenozoic Tales) Schultz, begin the introduction to the jaw-dropping book From Pencils To Inks: The Art of Mark A. Nelson.

I don’t have a whole lot of experience with The Goon, I’ve only read the first issue and the one-shot Dethklok Vs The Goon. I like what I’ve read, but I never really picked up on the series. Recently I saw Volume 10 of the series entitled: Death’s Greedy Comeuppance, and because I’m always looking for new stuff to read I thought why not? The Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense is going into its second storyline since they added “Hell on Earth” to its title, this one simply entitled Gods. I still don’t see the point in changing the title for the series, and I really wish they had done one ongoing series instead of all the different miniseries, but these are just things I’m picking on. What’s important is the story, and I really enjoyed the last storyline, New Worlds, so I’m expecting this one to stay on track and be...

Hellboy is one of my favorite comic books of all time so whenever there is a new book starring this demonic character I get really excited and it’s always one of the first books I read. This month Dark Horse released Hellboy: Double Feature of Evil and like every other Hellboy book this one did not fail to entertain me. From the title you can figure that this comic contains two Hellboy stories both written by Mike Mignola and drawn by Richard Corben.
The book starts with an old and abandoned movie theater with a very small...

I didn’t just have to buy it, I knew that I had to share this book with all of you and what better way to do that than by dedicating this week’s Trade Tuesday to this awesome book. First off, I love Adult Swim, I think they have some great shows. Metalocalypse is tied for my favorite Adult Swim show along with The Venture Brothers. The one thing that really pisses me off about Adult Swim is their scheduling. You get four to eight episodes and then nothing for six months to a year. So when I found out about a Dethklok comic book series, I was pretty excited. Especially since Brendon Small and Jon Schnepp are working on the series.
For anyone who has never seen an episode of Metalocalypse the series follows...

As someone who feels that being “weird” is one of the best attributes a comic book can have I am naturally going to gravitate to a book which purports to list the world’s most wigged out sequential shenanigans. The potential problem with such a book is, with countless thousands of great and not-so-great bizarre comics to choose from, would the choices for inclusion all be worthy of mention? And, maybe more importantly, what should have made it into the book and was instead left out?
Lucky for the reader, most...

Pixar Animation Studios has always had a keen eye for finding truly unique and individualistic artistic talents to create visually stunning ways to drive their stories forward. In the highly stylized opening title sequence for their fourth film, Monsters Inc., the notable influence of 1950’s animation began to appear. Of the many talented artists working at the studio, four names are most commonly associated with pushing this distinctive look forward: Lou Romano, Don Shank, Nate Wragg and, last but certainly not least, Scott...

Hell on Earth: New World is a new series from Mike Mignola that continues where King of Fear left off.

I love the universe that Mike Mignola created to play host to the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defence (B.P.R.D), and Hellboy. I love it so, because the stories which it unfolds are mostly based on historical truths (such as WWII, The Nazis and various other figures and events of historic significance), but with a paranormal twist. The paranormal twists it gives them though, are done in an entirely believable way. This may sound odd, but they are indeed believable stories. Why are they so appealing though?

Dark Horse Comics had a special release this past week, with their ‘Hellboy In Mexico’ one shot. Dark Horse don’t put out Hellboy one shots all that often, if anything I’d say they put them out every 2 months at least, so whenever one gets published, I see it as a little gem that is there for the taking. I am personally a huge fan of quite literally everything to do with Hellboy and the BPRD universe created by Mike Mignola. At the retailer’s summit occurring in Chicago before C2E2 last weekend, Diamond Comics, distributor of weekly comic book issues, floated the idea of moving the release day for comic books to Tuesday, with the comic book retailers paying 5 dollars a week more. They put the idea to a show of hands vote to the retailers in the audience, and Tuesday releases narrowly won out. Now it sounds as if this is all speculation and discussion amongst Diamond.

It is always exhilarating to discover an artist whose output is such a visceral rush that viewing their work is like going from 0 to 60 in two seconds. Goon’s been running strong since 1999, but it may have gone under your radar. If you’ve never bothered to pick this series up in its ten year run, the Chinatown Hardcover is a great place to start.

I initially thought the task of compiling a list of the best in comics and related art books released in 2009 would be relatively easy. Boy was I wrong. We saw a wealth of amazing output from the indie press, mainstream publishers and collected works of illustrative artists of the past and present. 2009 has been a fantastic year overall for sequential art, the best of the last several, with my only real problem being finding the time (and money) to take them all in.

Since writing my last Sequential Sunday entry about the supremely talented artist Mark Schultz, I have been giving much thought to his influences and what the work of those artists have meant to me as well. The name that kept entering my mind the most, one whose work I’ve admired since childhood, is that of Al Williamson. Many of the best creative endeavors are bound to be short lived. An artist will usually know when he’s said all he has to say before running the risk of going stale or to simply move on to the next phase of his artistic career. This certainly happens in the world of comics and seems to now apply to the brilliant strip The Perry Bible Fellowship by Nicholas Gurewitch.

The Cover for Dylan Dog Case Files
The first thing that stood out to me about the book was the size of it. A mammoth 680 pages of comics! Mike Mignola’s cover art (and inserts!!!!) drew me in, and the quick witted dialogue sold me on the whole idea. To be honest, it didn’t hurt that...

The undisputed master of the Japanese horror manga genre is Kazuo Umezu. Born in 1936, Umezu is part of the generation of artists and writers who grew up in the wake of the devastating atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki followed by the humiliating defeat of Japan in WWII. The generational shell-shock of these events undeniably shaped the future of their work and served as the starting point for what is now the massive Japanese pop culture landscape.

Putting aside the fact that the comics themselves featured many of the same classic characters we’ve known all our lives, the often-forgettable releases from Marvel in the 1990’s bares little resemblance to the company’s output today.
