On Free Comic Book Day, if you were lucky, then you could have gotten yourself a copy of War of the Supermen #0, which introduced this new storyline. I was looking forward to this book and I had high hopes. Now it is over with issue number four. Did this series leave me with a happy ending? The cover had “Kneel Before Zod!” so maybe.
Before I tell you the answer, here is my review of War of the Supermen #4.
This story takes place in the middle of the Hundred Minute War and we see different parts of the world, as...

Words, words, words. I’ve been thinking a lot about words this past week. Specifically, I’ve been thinking about the words used by comic book characters, but I’m getting ahead of myself. What got me thinking about words was Zatanna #1 so let’s talk about that.
Zatanna is a new series starring Zatanna Zatara, sometimes member of the Justice League, she’s a magician with actual magical powers. That’s really all you need to know about the character in advance. Oh, and of course, the words. Zatanna ...

Oh comics. I love you so, there are so many good stories you tell, but, there is something amiss between us. I’m sorry comics, but it has to be said: all the banners, all the epic fights, all the deaths, I’m all tuckered out. Please comics, it’s not you, it’s me, please can you stop the endless event books? Please can you give me stand alone stories and relatable characters?
Dear reader,
Have you had this conversation lately? Maybe not directly at comics like me, but are you also burnt out from our diet...

Welcome everyone to the pick of the week podcast for the week of May 5th. Join Sheldon, Dana and Simon and we talk about the best and worst in comics. Dana had pick this week and chose X-Men: Hellbound #1 although the guys were convinced it should have been Batman & Robin #12.
On this episode a number of heated debates, including a discussion about Avengers: The Origin #2 and whether or not retelling of classic stories is a good thing. Also, a look at Uncanny X-Men #524 and the reveal of who Wolverine’s best friend...

Toby Jones is said to be wrapping up negotiations to play Arnim Zola in Captain America: The First Avenger. Jones is a British actor who you might recognize from Frost/Nixon or you may recall his role voicing Dobby the House Elf in the Harry Potter films.
The character Arnim Zola was created by Jack Kirby making his first appearance in Captain America #208. Zola is a mad scientist, a biochemist who has teamed up a number of times with Red Skull to promote the nazi agenda. He also engineered several artificial bodies which...

One great thing about the comics medium is it’s ability to give us MORE of what we want. You can continue a show without committing the cast, you can produce a sequel to a movie without the big budget of special effects and you can even rejuvenate loved characters and stories in a stimulating new way. I am reminded of this because I read a comic this week based on a property popular during my childhood. So if you’ll indulge me, let’s step back into the 80s and take a look at Fraggle Rock.

As comic fans we’re always guessing what will come next for our favorite characters and creators. We bitch when we don’t like something and we beg for more of what we do. In my experience I don’t often get my way but I recently experienced a bought of serious instant gratification concerning my hopes for the Young Avengers.
If you listened to the POW podcast for April 14th, you’ll have heard me go on about my love for the Young Avengers and how glad I was to see this team play a part in Siege. I also...

This week’s Pick of the Week goes to Sheldon, as Dana had the pick last week. Join Sheldon, Simon, Rob and Dana, as they guide you through the week’s best comics. It was a good week for comics let me tell you that!
Aside from all the usual comic book banter, you’ll get an exclusive and heated debate on the art of Alex Ross. As well as Simon admitting to getting a Captain Cold tattoo, if people send him enough money! A lot of hilarity in this episode, and as I mentioned, some awesome comics including some hit...

A couple of weeks ago I made a trip to San Francisco for WonderCon and thanks to the Image Comics panel, was introduced to “Turf” a new comic series penned by on-air personality Jonathan Ross, with art from Tommy Lee Edwards. I knew who Ross was but even with him attached to the project I wasn’t immediately sold on picking this book up. Then I saw the cover and learned that “Marvel 1985″ artist Edwards was on the series. The two collaborating was enough to get me cautiously optimistic about the...

I’ve made no secret of my opinion about the typical comics being released from BlueWater Comics. They generally cash in on poorly put together comics about celebrities and while I can’t fault them for trying to capitalize on fan purchasing, I wish that their comics were better quality. They have a great opportunity to get people who are not comic fans into shops and introduce them to the medium, but the products they are putting out are more likely to act as a warning that comics are cheesy and filled with bad art. To be...

With the huge success of Iron Man the movie and the excitement leading up to Iron Man 2 on May 7th, you can’t fault companies for wanting to merchandise. I’ve seen all sorts of things, from shirts, to frisbees (yes frisbees), to phone accessories with the Iron Man logo, colors and likeness all being sold to capitalize on what has become a very popular character even outside the regular comic buying community. What I didn’t expect to see however is limited edition Iron Man cologne from Diesel.

The good news is, we are only 6 days away from the release, the bad news is, for some the return to the Who-verse is bitter-sweet.

From time to time, a character is introduced into the comics universe in a different medium (tv, movie , books) and is such a hit they get written in to the corresponding comics. As we come towards the conclusion of DC’s epic Blackest Night story we are all excited and looking ahead to the follow up, Brightest Day. Before the days of the color war and eventually Blackest Night, these stories were quite contained within the Green lantern titles, never really effecting the outside world.
Geoff Johns took a great risk and allowed the rich history of the lanterns to bleed into other titles changing the course of a lot of key books. At first i was a little concerned. Having read some Green Lantern,...

Rob’s got the pick this week, will he go for Blackest Night: Titans #2, or perhaps the final issue of Marvel Zombies: Returns. Will Sheldon be fond of the...

So sit in, open wide, and let Simon, Dana & Rob give you your weekly dose of hardcore comic-book banter. It’s a Sheldon-less show this week unfortunatly, because on Sunday it was his birthday, so we told...

If you’ve been on the iTunes homepage lately, you might have happened upon the Mayhem iTunes LP. I first heard about it through a friend but it got a lot of attention while it was featured on iTunes. This package is available only on iTunes 9 or later, and for only $1.99 it is insanely worth your money.
If you search iTunes for “Mayhem” you’ll be directed towards an album called “Tyrese Gibson’s MAYHEM! (Comic Book and Single)”. Already your interest may be piqued but it’s...

Hey all who have been impacted, I’m new to the site, so I thought I would post a little something about a comic that came out this week, Batgirl #1. Hopefully it’ll give you all a glimpse into the sick, opinionated head that is Dana.
Barbara Gordon is my favorite character. I loved her as Batgirl, I love her as Oracle, and I’ll always hold onto my foolish hope that she’ll one day be Batgirl again. I SERIOUSLY doubt that will ever happen, but here’s to hoping. I am writing this on the day the...
