Cosplay Girl of the Month: January 2014

Published on January 6th, 2014

One of the features we do here at Comic Impact is the cosplay girl (NO anime, manga, role-playing games just comics) of the month, that’s right hot girls dressing up like your favorite super- hero characters. This month we’re privileged to have Sugar Bunny aka Supa Tuna as the Cosplay Girl of the Month

What is your name?
Hi! My name is Courtney! A pretty standard name for the most part. At conventions though I go by Sugar Bunny. Another name people know me by is Supa Tuna, however I changed it two years ago to my childhood nickname; Bunny.

How old are you?

I just missed out on the 80’s. I was born in 1990. Currently that makes me 23?

Do you read comics and if so, what are your favorite titles?

I do love to read comics. I’m a huge x-men fan. Sadly I can’t always keep up with titles when I also have to pay for cosplay and just your general living costs. I started off with X-Men First Class. Currently I’m reading All New X-Men, Journey Into Mystery, The Fearless Defenders, Gambit, Uncanny Avengers, Young Avengers, Uncanny X-Force….there’s a bit of a pattern there but I’m also particular to a good Batman storyline and anything involving the Gotham City Sirens. I also LOVE Hellboy. That has to be my favorite Dark Horse comic.

What is your favorite comic book character?

I would definitely have to go with Rogue from the X-Men. I know, what a huge surprise! She was really the kick ass girl that got me so in love with X-Men in the first place. Her entire story arc has just been so relatable to me as a young girl and even to my current life that I feel the biggest connection with her overall.

Who are your favorite artists or writers?

I am in LOVE with Kieron Gillen. I started off reading his Journey Into Mystery and after he tugged away at my heart strings I was sold. I love his work and I love collecting anything he’s written. As far as artists go I could list a million because honestly I fall in love with everyone’s unique art style. To name a few Adam Hughes, J Scott Campbell, and Bruce Timm. Honestly there are so many artists out there I can’t list them all or remember all of their names. I know! Shame on me!

What got you into cosplay?

My older sister told me all about the wonders of cosplay. I started out cosplaying as Inuyasha my very first convention back in 2004. However I’ve really been dressing up in costume as characters all my life. My sisters and I used to make up characters and costumes for our favorite books and run around the house wreaking havoc in costume. We even made a fan movie for Harry Potter and we would pretend to be Hobbits or elves roaming in our backyard. My heart has always been into dressing up, but when I learned there was a community where I could do it all the time I signed up in a heartbeat.

If you do more than one character which one is your favorite, and if you do only one do you have some ideas for more costumes?

My favorite character is still Rogue. I love the classic costume and I really want to wear her a whole lot more. In terms of craftsmanship, my favorite work is my Lady Loki costume. I hand made all of her scale mail and the horns. It took a lot of blood sweat and tears but I honestly feel so proud over the costume. In the near future I do hope to make Hyppolyta from Fearless Defenders, Rule 63 Hellboy and many many more!

How long does it take for you to make a costume?

It usually depends on the difficulty of the character design and my financial means. I can spend anywhere from a few days of sewing to a month or two of careful tweaking. I prefer to always plan ahead and have a costume ready before a convention I attend.
Have you met any of the artists or writers where your costume is based on their work?

Sadly I have not yet had the honor. I would also feel like a complete idiot when I gawk over them or just fall incredibly silent with a gigantic grin on my face. It would be nice to show my cosplay to one of them sometime and really hear their input wether it be negative or positive.

Do you buy any toys, busts and etc. based on some of your favorite costumes?

I used to, but sadly space is limited. I no longer have room for all the gorgeous and pretty busts and statues out there. I wish I did. Perhaps someday when I live in Wayne Manor I’ll have infinite rooms to store a collection of beautiful toys.

So do people know you dress up like a comic book hero on your free time?
Generally people know or soon find out when they get to know me. My family all knows and supports my work. Some of my coworkers know or find out about it through a picture I post or costume parties I attend. Most of my friends are cosplayers and they are all in as deep as I am.

What is the funniest thing that has happened to you at a convention?

This past Comikaze I cosplayed as Harley Quinn with my boyfriend dressed as the Joker. He is super sweet and loves kids. The previous day he was dressed as Spiderman. All the kids couldn’t get enough of him! However put some clown makeup on him and the kids were terrified! They would cry and hide behind their parents until I came to the rescue with my rubber chicken. It was hilarious to me!

Do kids come up to you and think you are the real life character?

Yes! And it’s soooo adorable! When I dress as Tinkerbell all the little girls and even parents want pictures with me! And as I mentioned above, kids at Comikaze were convinced we were the real deal. I actually worked a christmas event as Black Cat this year and we had a few kids crying when they saw Black Cat and Spidey. I always feel like I’ve accomplished my goal when I get a kid who fully believes I am who I’m dressed up as. It’s FANTASTIC!

What do you like to do when you’re not costuming, such as other hobbies?

My other hobbies include drawing, reading, tumblr”ing” and watching tv/movies. I’m working 2 jobs currently so it’s a bit hard to balance everything. When I’m not overly busy I like to whip out an old PS2 game and play endless hours on it. I also just like to sew in general. I’ve been planning to undertake a historical rococo dress very soon and I’m excited to get to work on it.

Do you have a website or a Facebook? So people can contact you?
I do!
