The Impact:August 20th-25th 2012

Published on August 25th, 2012

Hey Guys. It’s another week that means another installment of The Impact.

DC’s New Power Couple is Superman and Wonder Woman.

Now I know what it’s like to write for TMZ. Courtesy of Entertainment Weekly. In next week’s issue of Justice League Superman and Wonder Woman will become DC’s new power couple. “This is the new status quo.” Says writer Geoff Johns and it will have an impact on all the heroes and villains in the DC Universe…. Here’s the thing I am always up for shaking things up in comics and trying new things as long as it’s true to the characters. I only hope that they take the time to pay this off because as of now it has not been set up very well. Justice League #12 hits stands August 29th.

Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis Leaving Aquaman?

Courtesy of Bleeding Cool. Word is that Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis might be leaving Aquaman after issue 16. Reis  will apparently be joining Johns on Justice League. Rich Johnston has a tendency to be right more than he is wrong when it comes to these types of announcements. That said, I hope this is one of the times he ends up being wrong. While I’m happy to see Reis join the Justice League artist rotation I’ve been loving what the team has done with Arthur Curry and Mera and am really sad to see them leave. I hope DC takes the time to find a team to replace them that is as high quality as Johns and Reis, who have finally got Aquaman living up to his full potential.

Geoff Johns Confirms Baz as the new Arab American Green Lantern.

Courtesy of Detroit Free Press. In early September Geoff Johns will be Detroit to celebrate the official debut of the newest Green Lantern, Baz in Green Lantern #0. On September 7th he will be signing at Green Brain Comics and on September 8th he will appear at the Arab American National Museum to celebrate the new hero’s debut. This is exciting news and I am glad to see more diversification in the DCU.

Andy Diggle on Action Comics?

Again courtesy of Bleeding Cool. Andy Diggle may be the writer called upon to write Action Comics once Grant Morrison concludes his run. This is very unconfirmed and word is we should not expect any form of confirmation before New York Comic Con in October. This could go either way Diggle has not written anything really high-profile since the Daredevil event Shadowland, which was not well liked or well received. Stay tuned.

Rob Liefeld Quits DC on Twitter in a Fantastically Public Display

robliefeldOn Wednesday Rob Liefeld (Deathstroke, Savage Hawkman, Grifter) announced  that he had quit  and  DC Comics on Twitter.

Reasons are the same as everyone’s that you hear. I lasted a few months longer than I thought possible. Massive indecision, last minute and I mean LAST minute changes that alter everything. Editor pissing contests… No thanks. Last week my editor said ‘early on we had a lot of indie talent that weren’t used to re-writes and changes … made it hard.’ Uh, no, it’s you.

Liefeld is the latest creator to make his displeasure with the company known joining George Perez and Chris Roberson. Liefeld says he plans to focus more on his creator owned properties like Blood Strike, which Variety is reporting will be making the leap to the big screen courtesy of producer Adi Shankar and his production company.

Judd Winick Exits  Batwing

Courtesy of Newsarama. Today Judd Winick confirmed that he was leaving Batwing.

“It’s with a heavy heart that I announce that I’ll be leaving the DC monthly Batwing. I’ve had a terrific time on the title and have loved crafting this adventure with some phenomenal people. Artists Ben Oliver, Marcus To, and Brain Reber have made these stories come to life. I will miss telling the tales of David Zavimbe, the Batman of Africa in many ways, but I’m proud of the work we’ve done. My departure is simply a time issue. I’m pursing a few other projects that make it impossible for me continue doing a monthly book.”

I am very curious to see what DC does with this book. I hope that it continues with a creative team that will really tries something a little different than a traditional superhero book.

Marvel Releases a Few More Sneak Peeks at Marvel Now!

This week Marvel continued to tease us with glimpses and previews of the new status quo. First up we saw John Cassaday’s new designs for Scarlet Witch, Rogue, and Havok.. I really dig what he did here taking all the iconic elements of the characters costumes but updating the just enough to be something a little more modern, while still keeping it timeless.

Stuart Immonen name on the cover will get me to buy any book. That trend will continue particularly after seeing this preview art for All New X-Men.

Next we got a look at the Mike Allred variant covers to FF , which is fastly becoming my most anticipated book of the relaunch.

CBR got the first look at Greg Land’s interior artwork for Iron Man.

DC Annouces Before Watchmen: Moloch By JMS and Eduardo Risso.

Today at Fan Expo DC Comics announced it was expanding Before Watchmen to include a two issue mini-series based on the villain Moloch. Written by J. Michael Straczynski with art by Eduardo Risso ( 100 Bullets, Spaceman) When asked about what appealed to him about the project and the character,

“…what we don’t see is how Edgar Jacobi went from being a kid to a magician/mystic, to a criminal, and finally turned his life around through Catholicism. That’s a hell of a journey. To be able to take the few facts about his life and stitch them together into a story that shows us both that process and his perspective was terribly exciting.”

The series is set to debut in November. I wonder if DC will continue to surprise us with more of these shorter mini-series in order to keep the event going….if the do I am not sure how I would feel about that. That said Eduardo Risso’s artwork looks great.

Also at Fan Expo it was  announced that Bill Sienkiewicz would take over inking Nite-Owl in light of Joe Kubert’s passing.

Brubaker Leaving Winter Soldier Replaced by Jason Latour.

wintersoldierYesterday at Fan Expo it was announced that Ed Brubaker will be departing Winter Soldier with issue #14. Loose Ends writer Jason Latour will be taking over the series. Brubaker spoke candidly with CBR about his departure.

“Well, originally, the book was going to end around #14 or #15, because sales weren’t as good as we’d hoped they’d be,” the writer explained. “I’d been planning for that end for about three or four months. Then I guess sales stabilized, and the Cap movie [sequel] was announced, and everyone really likes the book and likes the character, so they want to keep it going. But in the meantime, I’d taken on outside comic work that was making my schedule harder and harder to keep up with, and so when Tom [Brevoort] told me they were keeping it going instead, I just felt like I needed to let it go. I struggled with it, and Tom and I discussed several possibilities of me staying, some of which I can’t really discuss openly, because they concern internal workings of the company, but in no way was this an easy decision, and I feel bad if my readers think I’m bailing, because that wasn’t the case.”

I’m happy to see Brubaker leaving Marvel on good terms. His creator owned work has been firing on all cylinders and I look forward to seeing what he has lined up next.

Anna Kendrick Leads the Short List of Female Leads for Captain America: The Winter Soldier .

The New York Post revealed the short list of actresses vying for the female lead in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Topping the list is Anna Kendrick also on the list are Imogen Poots and Felicity Jones. I like Kendrick a lot and think she is due for an action lead role. I am curious if Imogen Poots or Felicity Jones would be down for playing the Red Skulls Daughter Sin? Captain America: The Winter Soldier is set for release on April 4, 2014.

Joe Carnahan Confirmed for Nemesis film.

This week Nemesis creator Mark Millar confirmed that Joe Carnahan will direct the film adaptation of the comic. It will be based on a script written by Carnahan and his brother Matthew. According to Millar,”Fox wanted us to get in the same room for the first time and really hash this out, which was exciting. Joe has a really brilliant take on this and Matt and he are going to take things from here so I’m really happy.” This has been a busy few weeks for Carnahan who was previously attached to direct the Daredevil movie for 20th Century Fox.

Two More Join the Cast of Kick-Ass 2.

Word is Jim Carrey and Lindy Booth are joining the cast of Kick-Ass 2. Carrey is rumored to be playing the Colonel with Booth as Night Bitch both are characters who are inspired by Kick-Ass to become superheroes.

Bryan Lee O’Malley Talks his New Project Seconds.

This week while talking with the Canadian Random House website Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O’Malley spoke about his upcoming project Seconds.

“I came up with the general idea for Seconds right after completing the first volume of Scott Pilgrim,” O’Malley says. “I worked in a restaurant in Toronto for a little while to pay the bills while writing the second volume and planning the rest of the series, and I had a few ideas for this other story, a story about a restaurant. So, Seconds is about a restaurant, and the restaurant is called Seconds, and 90 percent of the story takes place within it. Beyond that it’s really hard for me to explain and I’m going to have to work on that so I can talk about it properly when it comes out. But it’s funny and weird and kind of big and crazy despite the mundane setting.”

Well what do you guys think? does this get you guys excited?

More Invincible Death of Teases.

Okay Now Robert Kirkman is getting ridiculous teasing “The Death Of Everyone.” That said he is the only writer I known who would kill his entire cast.

Disney Considering a Rocketeer Reboot.

Did everyone pick up their copy of The Rocketeer Cargo of Doom? Courtesy of Vulture. Word is that Disney is considering a reboot of The Rocketeer. Apparently new studio chief Alan Horn wants to make it happen. It’s a surprising move that makes a lot of sense. The original film is largely considered a financial failure despite being quite beloved by fans. As a huge fan of the character and pulp adventures in general I am down for this…does Brad Bird have any free time coming up?
