Published on June 9th, 2012

Hey Everyone. I hope you all had a great week. It was quite a busy one with all the announcements, first looks, and the launch of a little event called Before Watchmen. If that isn’t proof summer is in full effect I don’t know what is. So sit back, relax and enjoy this week’s installment of The Impact.

DC Confirms Zero Issues and Four New Titles for September.

There had been rumors that DC was planning on publishing #0 issues for the month of September. Today it was confirmed via their official blog, The Source.  DC Editor-in-Chief Bob Harras described what they hope toaccomplish with the books.

#0s will be stand-alone stories. “Some issues will tell the origins of a character or a team, or in some case where an origin has already been told, they will fill in the blanks in terms of questions readers may have about the New 52 DC Universe,” Harras added.“Each of these issues promises to reveal something surprising.”

In addition to that we also learned of four new books joining the New 52. They include:

TALON – Co-Writers: Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV. Artist: Guillem March.

Meet Calvin Rose, the only Talon to ever escape the grasp of the Court of Owls. This former assassin of the Court is trying to live a normal life … but that’s impossible when he’s being hunted by his former masters!

SWORD OF SORCERY – Writer: Christy Marx. Artist: Aaron Lopresti.
Featuring the return of Amethyst, Amy Winston leads a strange life on the road with her mother and resents it. She’s about to learn it’s all been necessary when she discovers she’s the lost princess of Gemworld—and she’s being hunted by her murderous aunt. With a back-up story written by Tony Bedard with art by Jesus Saiz, set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, the monstrous warrior Beowulf is charged with finding and defeating the evil Grendel.

THE PHANTOM STRANGER – Writer: Dan DiDio. Artist: Brent Anderson.
Spinning out of his recent appearances in JUSTICE LEAGUE and DC’s Free Comic Book Day story, learn more about the true origin of The Phantom Stranger and his connection to the mysterious Pandora.

TEAM SEVEN – Writer: Justin Jordan. Artist: Jesus Merino.
Set in the early days of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, threads of the entire DC Universe collide. As Superman emerges, so does the world’s counter measures against him and his kind. Team 7 is comprised of Dinah Lance, Amanda Waller, Steve Trevor, John Lynch, Alex Fairchild, Cole Cash and Slade Wilson — and their story will change everything you know about DC COMICS-THE NEW 52.

It’s unclear at this time if the addition of four new books means the end of four already established titles. Stay tuned for more information.

Warner Bros. Announces Justice League Movie. Hires Writer for Wonder Woman.

Well this was a no brainer. After the unbelievable success Marvel had bringing The Avengers to the big screen I am surprised it took as long as it did. Variety is reporting that Gangster Squad writer Will Beall will be penning the script.  Now take this with a HUGE grain of salt…Superman Red Son and The Ultimates writer Mark Millar says he knows a friend of Bealls and he  shared what he knew about the take Warners is going for,

A pal of mine is good friends with the new Justice League screenwriter and said his take on the team is incredible. Very real-world and not at all what you might expect. WB has a chequered history with their superhero characters. They’re great with their boy wizards, but less consistent with their DC stable. But my chum said that this could be a thing of beauty and has been in the works for a little while now, not just an avengers knock-off. Best of luck to them. The tidbits I heard sound quite dark and mature, which isn’t what I expected. But word on Gangster Squad is great too so I feel this is in really good hands.

Again take it with a huge grain of salt and congrats to Mark Millar for turning the conversation back to him. The idea of a Justice League movie is far from new. Back in 2008 director George Miller had was getting ready to film a JLA film, the film had been written and cast (Adam Brody as the Flash, Common was John Stewart, Armie Hammer was Batman…) WETA had designed the costumes this was a very real thing before financial concerns and the Writers Strike did it in.  With Green Lantern not performing well at the box office, Dark Knight Rises ending Chris  Nolan and Christian Bale’s time in Gotham and  Man of Steel launching Henry Cavill’s time as Superman it will be interesting to see if Warners will go for a shared universe a’la Marvel or something else entirely.

Also announced was the news that Warners had hired Michael Goldenberg to pen a new Wonder Woman script. Goldenberg helped rewrite Green Lantern and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Other DC properties announced in development were The Flash, Aquaman, Green Arrow, Lobo, the Suicide Squad, and Shazam. While I’m happy to see DC start to get things in motion I hope they take the time to do it right. Avengers was a long time coming, Marvel and Kevin Feige put a lot of time and effort to get it right and it paid off for them.

Warners Announces Licensing Deal for Adam West Batman Series…DVD’s May Be Around Finally in the Cards.

batmanwithbombCourtesy of SuperHeroHype. Warner Brothers have negotiated a deal with 20th Century Fox for the rights to the Batman TV series starring Adam West. Rights that include the logo, and the likeness of several of the original actors to create a line of clothes, toys, homegoods and other products. Now the big question remain…”Will we see the show on DVD???” IGN asked star Adam West who gave a very informative answer.

I can’t say because I’m not privy to the suits and to all those back room discussions about it and who gets what slice of the pie. I think it’s probably a matter of how much money is involved, how much does it cost to pay off the music — the people involved with that — how much does it cost to pay off the actors — the guest stars, the stars, the peripheral actors, the stunt people. All those things, it’s very complicated. So Warners and Fox have to work that out, and I think they’re coming closer.”

There you have it folks. We should get our first looks at some products next week at the Licensing Expo in Las Vegas.

New Trailer Gives Us Our Best Look at Arrow Yet.

From what I hear the CW series Arrow is pretty darn good. This week the CW realeased this five minute trailer to give us our best impression yet. And who is that mask they flash at the end??? That’s right it’s Slade Wilson Deathstroke mask…hmmm that is very very interesting. Arrow will debut this fall.

Iron Man 3 Details Set Photos Reveal New Enemy, and Clarification on those Iron Patriot Pictures.

Early this week we got out first official picture from Iron Man 3 showcasing Tony Stark’s ever growing collection of armor. Other unofficial set pics reveal the presence of  fan favorite  enemy A.I.M. (I hope we get to see the yellow suits).

Also Latino Review is reporting that the Iron Patriot pics we saw last week were not in fact Iron Patriot, they were a stuntman in the new War Machine armor.

leviThor 2 Recasts Fandrel of the Warriors Three. Zachary Levi Expected to Sign On.

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Josh Dallas will be unable to return to the role of Fandrel in Thor 2 due to his commitment to the ABC series Once Upon a Time. The Hollywood Reporter has heard that Zachary Levi  is in talks to replace him. This is funny since Josh Dallas was brought in to replace Levi who had been cast as Fandrel in the original Thor but had to drop out when Levi’s series Chuck was renewed.

The Russo Brothers Set To Direct Captain America 2.

Anthony and Joe Russo were announced to be directing the sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger.  The directing duo’s previous credits include, Welcome to Collinwood and You, Me and Dupree as well as television series like Arrested Development and Community. While not the convential choice Marvel Studios has never been one to go with the obvious choice and for the most part it has been very successful for them. Captain America 2 will hit theaters April 4, 2014 and focus on Steve Rogers as he works with Nick Fury and adjusts to the modern world. It sounds like we will get more of the “Man out of time” elements we did not get to see in Avengers.

Marvel Animation Shake Up. Avengers: Earth Mightiest Heroes is Cancelled, new Avengers series announced. Ultimate Spider-Man Season 2 Announced.

Official word broke this week that Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes is cancelled and will be replaced with a new Avengers series entitled Marvel’s Avengers Assemble which should be released in 2013.  That’s the bad news, the good news is the Ultimate Spider-Man Animated Series was officially picked up for a second season.

TV Guide Gives us Our First Official Look at David Morrissey as the Governor.

Here is our first look at David Morrissey as the Governor. The Governor will be making his debut during the third season of AMC’s The Walking Dead. And while he does not look like the Governor of the comic comic creator Robert Kirkman assures comic fans he will be the Governor of the comics. “I think that he’s definitely going to be a character that people love to hate and are absolutely entertained by, but also somewhat terrified of. He’s definitely going to be a very important character and a very nuanced character. We are not going to be watering him down.”

I’m not worried. Morrissey is a great actor and the Governor has always been a character defined by his actions more than his appearance.  The Walking Dead’s third season debuts this fall.

New Dredd Poster, Banner and Pics.

Well we are finally starting to see some marketing for Dredd pick up, this week they released a new poster, banner, and two hi-res pictures. The more I’m seeing from this movie the more intrigued I’m getting. I am hoping we should  have a trailer soon. Dredd will be released September 21,2012.

Artist Gavin Aung Than Turns Neil Gaiman’s Inspirational “Make Good Art Speech” into a Comic.

Recently Neil Gaiman gave an incredibly inspirational speech at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. It was about the importance of making art and some advice of working in a largely freelance based industry. You can watch the speech in it’s entirety here.

Artist Gavin Aung Than did a wonderful job turning the speech into a comic. You should check it out HERE. I really enjoyed the speech and I thought I would share it with you guys.

Anyway that wraps up this week’s installment of The Impact. Have a great week and I will see you all  here next week.
