The Impact: February 4th -10th 2012

Published on February 10th, 2012

Hey Guys, I hope everyone has recovered from their Superbowl parties or Avengers commercial parties for the non sports fans. This was a busy week in the comic world but enough teasing lets get straight to it.

DC Shuffle: Artists Edition.

Another week, another creative team change. While not as radical as some in the past these are pretty big books going through some changes. Animal Man artist Travel Foreman is now going to be working on Birds of Prey starting with issue #9. Steve Pugh, Animal Man artist from the 90’s will replace him. Birds of Prey artist Jesus Saiz will replacing Ferndando Dagnino on Resurrection Man, Dagnino will be moving to Suicide Squad. While I loved what Foreman did on Animal Man that preview page from Pugh does look great.

DC Announces “New 52” Annuals.

Courtesy of Newsarama. This week DC announced that it will publish several oversized annuals for Batman, Teen Titans, and Animal Manstarting this May.

The Batman Annual will be co-written by Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV with art by Jay Fabok. The Annual will introduce Mr. Freeze to the “New 52.” When talking about bringing the villain back Snyder gave his impressions of the character.”Mr. Freeze is a character full of pathos and tragedy and at the end of the day, he’s one of Batman’s deadliest,”I really look forward to seeing what Snyder will do with the character, since playing Arkham City I have had an itch to see one of my favorite Bat-villains return.

Teen Titans Annual will be written by Scott Lobdell and Tom Defalco with art by Brett Booth. The Annual will be the first part of a three-part crossover between Teen Titans and Legion Lostand will introduce most of the recently announced Ravagers cast.

Animal Man Annual will be written by Jeff Lemire with art by Timothy Green III. Jeff Lemire says that “In many ways this Annual is like a prequel to the crossover storyline that Scott Snyder and I have planned for Animal Man and Swamp Thing.”

I like that DC kept the regular series’ writers on the Annuals so that they will fit perfectly into what they are already doing.

Somebody Saved Smallville. Season 11 to Continue as a Digital First Comic.

Courtesy of The Source. Great news Smallville fans. Today DC Comics announced that it will be continuing the series with a new digital first comic, Smallville Season 11. Written by Bryan Q. Miller with art by Pere Perez both of whom impressed the hell out of my with their Batgirl run. In the official press release Miller, who was a writer on the TV series, was quite enthusiastic;

“Six months after Clark Kent donned the cape and took to the skies to save Earth from Apokolips… enter Season 11!” “New allies abound!  New enemies afoot!  And old friends return where they’re least expected! Pere and colorist Chris Beckett have done a fantastic job of capturing the look of the show and the players, and Gary and Cat are knocking it out of the park on covers. I couldn’t be more excited to help give seasoned viewers and new readers an all-access pass to Clark’s first year in the cape.”

Cat Staggs is providing the cover art for the digital edition while Gary Frank will be doing the Fans will get the first chapter of the series online on April 13th with new chapters being released weekly. A print edition will then be released starting May 16th. I’m actually excited to see them do this. Smallville’s greatest enemy was always it’s budget and with comics there is no budget. Count me in.

DC Releases First Images of Before Watchmen Merchandise.

beforewatchmen1beforewatchmen2

Well it has been a week has everyone had time to fully absorb the fact that we are getting more Watchmen, whether we want it or not. Today on The Source DC revealed the first images. And there we go, there is the real reason we are getting more Watchmen comics. Not that it’s a surprise but now we know what that Before  Watchmen art Rich Johnston over at Bleeding Coolposted on Christmas was for, it was the designs for the statues.

Hold On To Your Sketchbook. Marvel Counter Sues Ghost Rider Creator Gary Friedrich.

gr250This week news broke that Gary Friedrich, creator of the Marvel character Ghost Rider has been ordered by the courts to renounce his creator credit for the character, pay $17,000 in damages to Marvel. See back in 2007 Gary sued Marvel and Sony, producers of the Ghost Rider movie claiming that the copyright for the character had reverted back to him. Then in 2010 Marvel counter sued him for $17,000 in damages for selling Ghost Rider merchandise of his own creation. Marvel says they will drop the suit if he renounces his creator credit and still pay them $17,000. The thing is Friedrich is practically penniless and  has never disputed the initial work for hire agreement he merely says that Marvel failed to properly retain the character. This is a very slippery slope comic fans. We all have walked Artist’s Alley at any comic convention if this sets the precedent you could say good bye to original sketches or prints. Which is sad but even more so for the artists, who rely on that extra to get by. So pay close attention to this case as it could have a huge impact on your comic convention experience.

The Amazing Spider-Man Trailer and The Avengers Superbowl TV Spots.

Earlier this week we got our best looks at two of the three major comic movies being released this summer. On Tuesday at midnight Sony released the trailer to The Amazing Spider-Man. The Marc Webb Directed reboot looks very promising, Andrew Garfield has sold me on his Peter Parker, (I saw the Comic Con Panel which showed about 10 minutes of footage.) his chemistry with Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy is fantastic. And best of all this Spider-Man cracked more jokes in the trailer than he did in the entire Raimi trilogy. Really excited to see this one. The Amazing Spider-Man hits theaters July 3rd, 2012. You can watch the trailer here.

The Avengers Extended Superbowl Ad was a minute of pure nerd out. That shot of the team standing back to back was a real thrill. I’m also really happy how little we really know about this movie and it should be a real treat to see once it hits theaters on May 4th. I love seeing the team standing together in live action. If only I could tell the 8 year old me to be patient and that he would only have to wait twenty years to see them brought to life on the big screen.Amazing.  You can watch the trailer here.

Tony Moore Sues The Walking Dead Co-Creator Robert Kirkman.

wakingdead1Courtesy of  The Hollywood Reporter. News broke on Thursday that original Walking Dead Artist and co-creator Tony Moore has filed a lawsuit against writer and co-creator Robert Kirkman. The suit alleges;

causes of action for promissory fraud, breach of written contract, breach of implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing, money had an received and accounting.

Moore says he has yet to be properly compensated and not been given access to the pertinent financial statements. Kirkman’s attorney, Allen Grodzky told The Hollywood Reporter the lawsuit is,

“totally frivolous. Mr. Moore is owed no money at all. And Mr. Moore’s contract has an attorneys’ fees clause in it so we will be going after him to collect attorneys’ fees. We are taking this matter very seriously.”

Get ready guys, I have a feeling  this is going to get ugly.

The Wolverine Gets a Release Date.

The sequel to Wolverine: Origins, officially has an official release date of July 26th, 2013. The sequel will be directed by James Mangold and feature Hugh Jackman again returning to the role of Logan.

Well there you have it folks that’s all the major news and announcements for the week. Hope you all enjoyed this installment of The Impact. See you all here same time next week.
