Hey everyone! I am Matt and I am here to give you all the news making its way around the comic blogosphere. I hope everyone has had a chance to check out all the awesome news and announcements that made their way out of  New York Comic Con. If not, I included the link to NYCC news round up below. So sit back, relax and enjoy the latest installment of The Impact.

Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons Announce The Secret Service.

The Impact: New York Comic Con Edition

The Impact October 10th-15th 2011

Marvel Lays Off 11 Staff Members.

Courtesy of CBR. Today it was learned that Marvel Comics will be laying off upwards of 11 staff members including editors Alejandro Arbona (Invincible Iron Man and Iron Man 2.0), Jody LeHeup (Deadpool, X-Force, and Strange Tales), Spider Office assistant editor Rachel Pinnelas,  and  Production artist Damien Lucchese. Marvel made it clear that this has nothing to do with it has nothing to do with their performances and that it is strictly a “cost-cutting measure.”  I wish all those guys and girls the best, and that they land on their feet as soon as possible.

Marvel releases Teaser For the 2012 Spider-Event.

We are not even done with “Spider-Island” and Marvel is already starting to tease the next major event in the Spider-verse, “The Ends of the Earth” written by Dan Slott with art by Claudio Caselli. Doc Ock has had a real resurgence in the Marvel U since the launch of “Big Time” and the Invincible Iron Man arc featuring him was excellent.

Great, like I needed more of a reason to see Brad Bird’s live-action directorial debut. According to SlashFilm there will be a six-minute prologue to The Dark Knight Rises attached to IMAX screenings of  Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. While there has been no official confirmation, this makes sense. Warner Bros. did a similar move when they released the bank heist prologue to The Dark Knight with the IMAX prints of I am Legend back in 2007. Mission Impossible: GP is the biggest IMAX film to be released in December. I would also expect a regular theatrical trailer that week as well. The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters on July 20th 2012.

Mark Hamill Officially Retires from Playing the Joker.

hamill

Last year when Batman: Arkham City was announced  Mark Hamill said this would be his last performance of the Joker.  When the game was released this week he confirmed that announcement when he tweeted “Hello/Goodbye Joker! I’ve enjoyed every minute behind the wheel of the Crown Prince’s crazy car- I’m going to miss him more than I can say!!” Hamill has performed the character since 1992 and his performance  and voice will forever define the character. I do hope that when Warner Bros. Animation adapts The Dark Knight Returns they will be able to coax Mr. Hamill out of retirement for one last go as the Clown Prince of Crime. I just want to thank Mr. Hamill for all his hard work bringing the one of my favorite villains to life.

Fox Developing The Punisher as a TV series?

thepunisher

Courtesy of Deadline. Fox has apparently ordered a pilot based on the Marvel Comic The Punisher from former Criminal Minds showrunner Ed Bernero and ABC Studios. Described as

“…an hour-long procedural with a Marvel signature and a new take on one of comic book giant’s iconic characters, Frank Castle, a rising star detective with the NYC Police Department who moonlights as the vigilante Punisher seeking justice for those the system has failed.”

This is the second pilot based on a comic that Fox has ordered, the first being The Spectre based on the DC comic of the same name. The Punisher could work well as a TV show, particuarly if they look very closely at Jason Aaron and Greg Rucka’s Punisher runs. I think I would feel better about this if it would be on FX.  That said the few episodes of Criminal Minds that I have seen have had some pretty messed up stuff in them and they were on CBS. Well, there you go folks, that is all the news that’s fit to print. Hope everyone has a great weekend and stay tuned to Comic Impact as we bring you all the latest and greatest comic news.
