We’re all familiar with the currently very popular ‘The Walking Dead’ comic series and TV show, and the vast amount of other zombie comics, movies, literature and video games on offer to us horror lovers. But one thing I wonder most of the time is ‘what would happen if a zombie invasion originated somewhere other than the United States’?

Most of you will be saying it would be no different at all, and why on Earth would it be different? Zombies won’t act differently depending on where they came from. Some films and their comic adaptations, such as for example, ‘28 Days Later’ take place in the United Kingdom and not a lot is vastly differnet in those. But this is of course all fiction. Fictitious stories about a fictitious (currently…) breed of monster! But for one citizen in the UK, this is not something we should enjoy seeing on our TV screens or in our comics and books. No, a zombie outbreak is all too serious and we should prepare for it!

The lucky people at Leicester City Council recently received a letter from a ‘concerned citizen‘, asking ‘what provisions were inplace in case of an zombie outbreak’. This request has to be addressed as part of the Freedom of Information act, which allows a right of access to recorded information held by public authorities. The anonymous citizen then stated that ‘preparations for such an event are poor’. So by this person’s standards, should the city perhaps be turned into a military safezone?

The even more worrying thing for me personally is that Leicester is where I study at University right now, so I’ll be one of the first to bite the bucket if a breakout does happen there. A word for word copy of the ‘concerned citizen’s’ letter can be read below.

‘Dear Leicester City Council,

Can you please let us know what provisions you have in place in the event of a zombie invasion? Having watched several films it is clear that preparation for such an event is poor and one that councils throughout the kingdom must prepare for.

Please provide any information you may have.

Yours faithfully,

Concerned Citizen.’

I suppose it’s about time we all re-read our copies of ‘The Walking Dead’ and started taking down hard notes and started giving each other tips on how to survive this inevitable invasion.
