The DC Relaunch: The First 22
So, unless you’ve been living under a rock the past week or so, you’re aware of the DC relaunch. What’s that? You’ve been living under a rock for the past week or so? Well, read on to find out the skinny on this new direction at DC.
After Flashpoint #5 releases on August 31 (the only book being released by DC that week) DC has announced that they’ll be relaunching 52 of their titles at issue #1. DC has been quick to say that this is not a “reboot,” just a new direction for the relaunched titles. They also haven’t said if the 52 books will be the only ones they’ll be publishing, or if certain other books will be allowed to maintain their current run.
Readers have been rather forthcoming with their opinions on this matter (both good and bad), and while we at Comic Impact do have some opinions on the matter, we’re saving that for another day. Today, we’re here to bring you the 22 relaunches that DC has announced thus far along with the new creative teams.
Check out what DC has in store for us come September:

Aquaman by Geoff Johns and Ivan Reiss

Batgirl by Gail Simone, Ardian Syaf and Vicente Cifuentes

Batman by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo

Batman and Robin by Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason

Catwoman by Judd Winick and Guillem March

DC Universe Presents by Paul Jenkins and Bernard Chang

The Flash by Francis Manapaul, Brian Buccellato (both on writing and art)

The Fury of Firestorm by Gail Simone and Ethan Van Sciver

Green Arrow by JT Krul and Dan Jurgens

Green Lantern by Geoff Johns, Doug Mahnke and Christian Alamy

Justice League by Geoff Johns and Jim Lee

I agree that a lot of them LOOK really cool, but I’m afraid it’s just going to be more of the same retelling of origins and re-introducing villains that we’ve read 100 times already. I’ll be picking up a few, definitely the JT Krul stuff, but I’m having a difficult time getting excited about this.
I’m all for DC doing their version of Ultimate Marvel, I just wish they could do it without sacrificing everything they’ve already got. I mean, imagine if Marvel stopped printing 616 stories and did only Ultimate. It’d be awful!
I just wish the higher ups at DC would try focusing on better, character driven stories as opposed to flashy events. Also, there’s a Dick Grayson book, a Jason Todd book and Damien is Robin…where the Hell is Tim Drake? Please DC! Don’t take Red Robin away from me!
