Review: Cinderella Fables are Forever #3

Published on April 19th, 2011

How much fun is this book?! Seriously, I love Cinderella: Fables are Forever. Issue #3 came out last week, and it is just as wild of a ride as it ever was. I have never liked Jack of Fables, but I think that’s mostly because I find Jack to be an ass. I was a bit skeptical when I found out that my beloved Cinderella was spinning off, because two spin offs from a series does not seem like a good thing. Now we are on the second installment of Cindy’s spin off and she is just as awesome as ever.

In this issue, Cinderella is hot on the tail of code name “Silver Slipper” and she just might catch her this time. The two of them had a run in back in the 1980s, but this time it’s an all or nothing situation (I think I could write the narration for the movie trailer). Cinderella has tracked her half way around the world and now is headed back the other way. She’s landed in Burkina Faso in search of “The Spider”. Cinderella knows that she needs to become a fly in his web in order to proceed.

I’m really having so much fun reading these books. I love the espionage. I love the creatures they have to fight. I love the seamless transitions from the past to the present. Really, Chris Roberson just knows how to tell an incredibly compelling story. I like all the references to classic Bond movies, and Cinderella’s constant recalling of her training with Bigby Wolf is a very clever reminder that she comes from the Fables world that we love so much. I mean, there’s a reason that its mother series has over a hundred issues. The mythology is rich and every story they tell with Cinderella, Jack, or anyone else just enhances the incredible world that has been created. There’s really nothing quite like getting lost in the citizens of Fabletown and their stories. It enhances all the awesome memories I have of reading fables and fairy tales as a child. Being allowed to live in a state of nostalgia is one of the best gifts anyone could give me.

Aw, shucks! Look how I got all mushy! I just wanted to express my love for these Cinderella side storylines and this happened. They are so much fun! I really don’t think I said that enough in this review. One more time? Cinderella: Fables are Forever is the most fun I’ve had reading a series since I fell in love with the original Fables books. I’m being sucked in all over again, but this time it’s with new characters – or I should say old characters used in new and different ways. I hope Cinderella gets her way and captures the elusive “Silver Slipper”. The cliff hanger from the end of this book just makes me hungry for the next issue. What’s next for Cindy after falling into the Spider’s web? I have to remember what Cindy always says, “It isn’t a trap if you want to get caught.”
