Collecting: Green Lantern First Flight Maquette

Published on April 2nd, 2011

This summer we’re going to see the silver screen debut of DC Comics’ own legend, Green Lantern.  With any luck, Green Lantern will not only be the beginning of a fantastic, new film franchise, but will also pave the way for other DC favorites like Flash, Green Arrow (PLEASE!!!) and Wonder Woman.  So, to get us ready, let’s look at an amazing Green Lantern statue!

This DC Direct statue is of Green Lantern Hal Jordan from the DCU animated feature, Green Lantern: First Flight.  It was sculpted by Karen Palinko and stands about 9″ tall x 4.25″ wide x 4.75″ deep (including the base).  This particular piece is limited to 4,000 individual statues with a retail price $89.99.

It’s really difficult to find fault with this statue, unless you weren’t a fan of Green Lantern: First Flight.  The sculpting style is remarkably similar to the animation style of the film.  Hal’s pose is very dynamic, proudly holding up his ring (which is actually sculpted onto his right hand and not simply painted on) in the air in a display of defiant power.  The muscles on his chest and abs are part of the sculpt, but overall he isn’t too grotesquely muscular.  The musculature of the arms and legs are very understated.  The sculpt of the face is really fantastic.  There are lots of little details like the angle of Hal’s cheekbones, his slightly protruding lower lip and the curl of his hair that really make the whole head very dynamic.

The paint on this statue is very interesting as well.  The black portions of Hal’s costume are a simple, flat black which really draw the eye toward the shiny green of the torso, boots and gauntlets.  The eyes are also very well painted, featuring a light green for the entirety of the pupil and iris.

My one, big complaint with this statue is the Green Lantern emblem on Hal’s chest.  It should really have a three dimensional plate protruding from his chest, baring the symbol of the Green Lantern Corps, but sadly it’s nothing more than a flat decal.

All in all, this is a really excellent statue and one of the better Green Lantern pieces you can find.  As previously stated, this statue retails for about $90, but if you look around, you can find some really good deals on it.  Over at Amazon, they’re selling it for only $34!!!  But hurry, they’ll be sold out in no time.
