Cosplay Girl of the Month: February 2011

Published on February 5th, 2011

One of the features we do here at Comic Impact is the cosplay girl (NO anime, manga, role-playing games just comics) of the month, that’s  right hot girls dressing up like your favorite super- hero characters. This month we’re privileged to have Emily Ruth  for this months Cosplay Girl of the Month!

1-What is your name? Emily Ruth

2-How old are you? 23, turning 24 this month! Representing my birthday month!!

emilyruth13-Do you read comics and if so, what are your favorite titles? Comic books, graphic novels….. SO DIVINE J I’ve always loved reading X-men and Batman comics. From X-men my favorite issues are # 7 #12 #39 and #42 .There are others like Uncanny X-men, Rogue, and X-Factor. Then from Batman I love issue # 66, #181, The Batman Adventures #12, I just got Gotham City Sirens and although it’s a short series I must say I did like Michael McMillan’s LUCID. Wolverine Origins series is my most prized possession well….next to Batman: The Killing Joke, loved that one!

4-What is your favorite comic book character? Poison Ivy!! Although, I’ve always had a fascination with the X-men, all the mutants and their powers like Rogue, Gambit, Juggernaut, Phoenix and Cyclops. I have mad love for Wolverine and the Joker.

5-Who are your favorite artists or writers? Jack Kirby, J. Scott Campbell, Bob Kane, Stan Lee, Frank Miller, Alan Moore, and Bill Finger

6-What got you into cosplay? See my brother brought me to my first Con in 2009. We attended the San Diego Con. Now he had been going to cons five years prior to me because he does Press for several websites. Well he would always return with pictures of people in these amazing costumes so I always thought going to Con it was MANDATORY to dress up so that’s why I did it. I will never forget waking up early Friday morning all decked out as Slave Leia, I go down to the convention to get in line thinking I’m gonna see all these great costumes and I see this HUGE line of people…..and not one person was in costume!! I thought “What??? Did I miss something???” I was so very scared and sad because I didn’t know what to think…But of course when I got inside I saw many costumes and I felt MUCH better

7-If you do more than one character which one is your favorite, and if you do only one do you have some ideas for more costumes? I really enjoyed doing Ivy probably because that costume took the longest to make. I just completed the newest “version” of it and I will debut it at San Diego this year! I’m going to try out Ariel when I go to Anaheim and then my new Slave Leia 2.0 version costume when I go to Long Beach on April 23, the one-day con. I’m also working on Jessica Rabbit and Phoenix. I just started cosplaying in 2009 so I’m slowly building a costume collection, still a newbie.

8-How long does it take for you to make a costume? Depends on the style of it and if I can just pre-buy some pieces. My longest was Ivy because of all the leaves I had to assemble. That took about 10 hours. The new version I made didn’t take quite as long….probably 4 hours max. The bra for Ariel took like an hour or less but the skirt for Ariel is still being worked on so we’ll see the skirt surpasses my time I did for Ivy.

9-Have you met any of the artists or writers where your costume is based on their work? I have not L One of these days I will sit on Stan Lees lap like Santa Clause and take a picture and put it on my fireplace…..if I don’t like break his legs -_-

10-Do you buy any toys, busts and etc. based on some of your favorite costumes? I LOVE buying art work, I enjoy seeing different artist do their interpretation and composition of characters, it’s so cool to me. I would love to buy lots of toys and figures but I have zero room in my house! Of course I always leave with a bag of comics, not just for me but my friends who love them as well. Share the love!!!

11-So do people know you dress up like a comic book hero on your free time? Oh yes! The thing I love most about my friends is they really love and respect my hobby. Also they offer to volunteer to help make my costumes as well which is really cool. I also model my cosplay to help out my photographer friends and get them some experience behind the camera. It’s the best hobby; everyone has got to try it at least once.

12-What is the funniest thing that has happened to you at a convention? Well it happened after the convention. See being Slave Leia got me into Seth Greens Robot Chicken party so I went as Leia and when I heard the music I decided to dance with the Storm Troopers, Yoda and I think Darth Vader started dancing too!! Here is the link someone caught me dancing, it’s at 0:50

Another funny moment, when I was also Leia was being in a Matt Beusch video, there’s two parts on YouTube. I loved that because I was being “serious” but sort of goofy at the same time.

PART 1 –

PART 2 –

As Ivy, well nothing majorly funny happened but at one moment Catwoman (my friend Paula and I ) were taking photos and this guy with a Taylour Launter cutout mask came up to me and I started acting all flirty with him and then outta no where Princess Tiana comes with her frog prince so were all one big gang acting lovey dovey and silly, it was awesome.

I know the more I cosplay, the more memories I will gain.

13-Do kids come up to you and think you are the real life character? That hasn’t happened yet. I believe because most of the children I meet are also in costume so they kind of know what’s going on but the children are SO cute! I had one girl call me Tree Lady when I was Poison Ivy and she wanted a picture with me because I was a tree.

14-What do you like to do when you’re not costuming, such as other hobbies? I love to paint and draw, art is a huge passion of mine and cosplaying became just another form of expression for me. I’m also a runner; I’m training this year for five 5k runs and then next year hoping to do my first half marathon! I also like to roller blade, yes I am that weird person that still roller blades. Every now and then I go to libraries and check out a bunch of different cook books and experiment with recipes, I love cooking it’s great fun! Since I love people and I love helping others I do volunteer work at shelters and I go on small mission trips as well. I just love people and I want to help make a difference. I also voice cast, I work with a podcast and I voice cast Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, Ariel, Leia, and other random characters as well. It’s called Iceberg Lounges Podcast…its free on iTunes. The whole cast does it for fun, it’s very awesome! I do enjoy reading, not just comics, but Shakespeare plays, Old English novels and all types of poetry.

15-Do you have a website or a MySpace? So people can contact you? Myspace? hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahaha oh you’re serious? Well I have a website:  My website will link you to my facebook, twitter, and podcast.

Thank you SO very much for having me, I feel so honored and just gosh darn proud to be featured here. You can’t see me, but I’m blushing =^_^= If you’re reading this….THANKS FOR READING J Hope to meet you all soon a Con!
