Comic-Fail: Gender Sensitivity

Hey, everybody!  We’re bringing you a new feature called Comic-Fail.  We like to talk a lot about the stuff we love in comics where they totally got it right, but unfortunately, sometimes they miss the mark.  We’re here to shine a light on those Comic-Fails.

Today we’re going focus on how comics might not have given the ladies the respect they were due.  Now, a lot of complaint has been made about women in comics being objectified or over sexualized, but there have been other times when the gender inequality was a bit more blatant.  Let’s take a look.

First we’ll take a look at Wonder Woman.  She’s hailed as the first and most powerful woman of comics, but, as these panels show, she’s had some trouble getting out of her own way in the past.

Crippled by her own vanity. Hera would be ashamed...or would she?

Wonder Woman's supposed to be an inspiration to all women. Unfortunately, she appears to be the only good one.

What are you going to do, kegel them apart?

See, ladies? It's really your own damn fault that you're slaves.

Wow, that was pretty difficult to deal with.  You’d think a female empowerment book like Wonder Woman would be a little better with keeping the sexism to a minimum.  Let’s see what Batman has to say on the topic of gender equality.

She should be happy! He's talking about the Bat-Cave! I'LL be your stay-at-home wife, Batman!

Sadly, this scene wasn't featured in Batman: A XXX Parody.

Jeez! Superman is into spanking, too! In his defense though, it was apparently "a well-deserved spanking!"

Wow, DC really didn’t set a very good example with gender relations.  Let’s see how the ladies got treated over at Marvel.

It's not your fault Sue, it's just your nature to be a dumb broad.

Jeez, Matt Murdock! You're a lawyer! You should know better!

In case you were wondering, morale is code for boners.

So, there you have it.  I hope we’ve all learned something here about how to be sensitive to gender issues.  We should all use these Comic-Fails as an example of how dehumanizing sexism can be and how, ultimately, it holds us all back…but sexism is just a myth anyway, so I wouldn’t worry about it too much.  Hey, ladies!  Who wants to make me a sammich?

“Quiet, or Papa spank.” Nolan MUST work that line into “Dark Knight Rises.”
