Review: Superior #1

Published on October 20th, 2010

Before I start my review of this book, let me just say I have a love/hate relationship with Mark Millar’s comics. I hate the delays on his books and 98% of the time I love the story he is telling us and I am just like a kid on Christmas. Like I recall buying ‘Kick-Ass/Wolverine: Old Man Logan’ when it was coming out, but it took over a year to come out.

That’s why I told myself with ‘Nemesis’, I’ll read the first one and if I’m not in love it with it I’ll just wait and buy the trade when it comes out. So far I am waiting for the trade on that book. I recall hearing about ‘Superior’ and I told myself “fuck it I’ll just wait for the trade of that book”. Then when I was in the comic shop last Wednesday, I told myself “damn it Leinil Yu (New Avengers, Secret Invasion) is on this book and I love his artwork”. So I got myself a copy of Superior #1 and what do I think of it? Is it the best comic of the year? No.

‘Superior’ is the story of a young boy named Simon (great name) who has multiple sclerosis and before the MS he was a star basketball player in high school and all his old friends are picking on him but his best friend (Chris) is still there for him. The book opens with an action scene from a film called “Superior 5”. That’s right, the same as the comic and if Zack Snyder wants ideas on how to directed the new Superman film then he needs to look at the action scenes from this because this have some of the best scenes in a comic for this year.

One night he wakes up to see a space monkey talking to him. I know it sounds funny, true, but just listen to this weeks ‘POW’ podcast as we talk about that idea. I would lose my shit if I saw a space monkey telling me. ‘Simon I am here to grant you one wish’, and that is what the monkey does. So Simon, our main character, tells him he wants to be superior. This first issue ends with Simon aka Superior, talking to Chris telling him “…I think I’m in deep shit”.

I can’t wait for the next issue. Leinil Yu’s artwork is just drop dead gorgeous. There are a few pages that I would buy in a heartbeat. Such as the stuff with the space monkey. I went back and read this book a few more times after I was done with the rest of my books from last week. Superior #1 is on my top 10 comics of the year and I can’t wait to read the next issue. I just hope it’s not 6 more months until the next time where we see the space monkey and Superior again.

I hate saying this but who knows, maybe this book is just one big ass storyboard for Mark Millar’s next film. I hope not because this maybe some of his best work since Kick-Ass and his first run on the Ultimates Vol-1 Super-Human. I just hope we get the next five issues within the next year. Like I say, I have a love/hate relationship with Mark Millar books.
