Casting News: Spider-Man

Published on October 2nd, 2010

One of the biggest comic book movie shocks of 2010 has been the sudden firing of Sam Raimi from the Spider-Man films and the proposed “reboot” of the franchise.

Today, Deadline is reporting that Sony Pictures will “imminently offer the role of Mary Jane Watson” to actress Emma Stone (Zombieland, Easy A) in the upcoming reboot. The role was filled by actress Kirsten Dunst in the previous three Spider-Man films.

Stone has been on a short list of actresses for Peter Parker’s love interest (or interests) along with Alice in Wonderland‘s Mia Wasikowska, Imogen Poots from 28 Weeks Later, Valentine’s Day‘s Emma Roberts and others although the studio has been quiet as to who the female roles would be.  It was reported earlier that there would be two female lead roles/love interests.  At this point it likely points to either Gwen Stacy or Felicia Hardy/Black Cat as the other female role.

The only other actor officially tied to the film is Andrew Garfield who will be playing the lead role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man.  The film will be directed by relative newcomer Marc Webb.  Spider-Man is scheduled for a 2012 release date.
