Previews: Casanova #1

Published on June 16th, 2010

We love Matt Fraction’s ‘Casanova‘ series here at Comic Impact. We picked the first collected volume titled ‘Luxuria’ as one of our Book Of The Month’s a while back (if you do not know what the story is, just download the podcast in the link), and recommended that those of you who had not read it should make it a top priority to check out. Well, if you never got the chance to read it first time around, then this is your second chance! No excuses this time folks!

ICON publishings are re-releasing the ‘Luxuria’ storyline, but this time, in colour! If you weren’t aware, the original release of Casanova was purely a black, white and limey-green colour scheme. It looked wonderful first time around, and I can tell you that the new re-release with added colour looks just as awesome! Below is a sneak peak at a trio of pages from the upcoming first issue, to be published next month!

These new, re-worked colours look absolutely gorgeous. Gabriel Ba’s pencils look amazing. It obviously recognises that the minimalist style we saw first time around went down well with fans and comic art critics! The tone of colour on the faces and areas of skin on the characters are not as bold as I would have thought, and the unique aesthetic is kept from the original colour scheme. I thought it would have been coloured in a traditional comic book way, but I am so glad it came out like this. It is better than the original colour scheme, whilst not going over the top! I adore it!

This is one that old fans and new readers are going to love. It also features a bonus (and presumably unseen to anyone) story, written by Fraction himself and drawn by Fabio Moon, who is the artist on the second volume of Casanova; ‘Gula‘, brother to Gabriel Ba.

One of my favourite comic books is being re-released with an improved colour scheme and added bonus material, what more could a fan want! Be sure to check this series out! It hits shelves on July 8th 2010 under ICON publishings!
