Sneak Peek: Lady Gaga Comic

Published on April 15th, 2010

I’ve made no secret of my opinion about the typical comics being released from BlueWater Comics. They generally cash in on poorly put together comics about celebrities and while I can’t fault them for trying to capitalize on fan purchasing, I wish that their comics were better quality. They have a great opportunity to get people who are not comic fans into shops and introduce them to the medium, but the products they are putting out are more likely to act as a warning that comics are cheesy and filled with bad art. To be fair they usually have great covers, but like their celebrity content, it’s just another hook to fool a fan into buying the comic.

But enough on BlueWater’s past, I’d actually like to praise something rather clever that they have done. BlueWater announced a new series of celebrity related comics called “Fame” . The BlueWater website has quotes from President Darren G. Davis boasting that

“Fame gives us the ability to tell more interesting stories about a wider variety of notable personalities. Conversely, it allows us to focus the scope of our other biography titles to more socially and political important figures.”

Did that sound like they were saying these celebrities are unimportant and should be kept out of the good titles? Did they just insult their own book? As far as I’m concerned I’d rather read a comic about Lady Gaga or Robert Pattinson than Joe Biden or Colin Powell. Not that it matters, it’s likely to be the same book under a different title. Davis was also quoted as saying that:

“Over the past year we saw an opportunity to broaden the scope of who reads comics,” and continued “There were many who had never picked up a graphic novel or comic book buy our biography titles like Female Force and Political Power. Fame is the natural extension of that trend.”

Like I said the idea behind this is great! I’m 100% behind bringing in new readers but I’m not sure these comics can do it on their own.

Here’s where the praise starts.

BlueWater is releasing a preview issue of their Lady Gaga comic of “Fame” on Free Comic Book Day, May 1st. That means select stores will have free copies of what might end up being a highly sought after comic. The great thing about releasing it on FCBD is that not only can you bring new readers in with the pull of Gaga and the promise of free content, but you do it on a day when other companies are also offering free comics! This means that BlueWater can lure in the kiddies with their pretty covers and while they’re there, can be introduced to free content from quality books like “Irredeemable” or “Atomic Robo”! Yes, BlueWater, whether intentionally or not just opened the door in a big way for excellent comic exposure.
