Figure Friday: Iron Man Mark VI with Power-Up Glow

Published on March 12th, 2010

Did you know there is a film called Iron Man 2 coming out this May? Did you know that I love Iron Man? And if you’re not reading The Invincible Iron Man by Matt Fraction and Salvador Larroca then stop reading this review and go and order Invincible Iron Man Omnibus, Vol. 1, you will thank me.  Are you wondering how these new toys are going to hold up for fans of Iron Man like myself? Are they better than the ones from the first film? This week we’re going to take a look at Iron Man Mark VI with Power-Up Glow

Package Description

Built from exotic, nearly indestructible materials and powered by a highly advanced ARC reactor, the Mark VI armor is so powerful that excess energy must be bled off as sparking, glowing energy.

Appearance
The color feels very much like the Iron Man that we know and love with the red and gold color scheme. That is because this is the armor that we’ll see in the film.  Also, this figure lights up when you press the head down. The detail and sculpt on this is great. An orange LED is housed within the torso, and the torso is lightly painted with red, except for the arc reactor area.  It’s fun to light this Iron Man up in the dark.

Poseability
Just like the first film’s figures they have very limited range of motion. It feels like they took the 6 inch figures, and made them into 3 3/4 inch figures.  It is hard for him to do some more dynamic poses however, and in turn doesn’t stand up right, because one of his legs is longer than the other.

His hands fell down about 10 times when I was taking this photo of him. There is no  abdominal articulation and the shoulders have an extremely limited range of motion. This sucks when it comes to an Iron Man figure, because I like to have his hand up showing his repulser blast . The head is like a button, it’s very loose and feels like he has been head banging to AC/DC for the past 3 years. It feels like it is going to fall off.

Final Judgment:5/10
I don’t think a light up gimmick can save this figure. Gimmicks are cool as long as they don’t compromise the articulation too much, so unfortunately this gimmick does not help with the final score.  But, if you’re looking for a cool Iron Man figure and you don’t care about the poseability then this is the figure for you. If you’re looking for something with great dynamic poses then I am sorry, this is not the figure for you.

The best part of the package design is where it says ‘Avengers Assemble’. All the new Iron Man figures come with  3 armor cards with the web site IronMancards.com, that just takes you to Marvel.com. Maybe they are working  on something big once the film hits. For now I am not sure what the deal with the cards is. There is also a stand that has a place to hold these cards. If you’re a fan of Iron Man, don’t worry, we still have a lot more Iron Man 2 figures to talk about. So bookmark this site, as we take a look at more figures from this line and the rest of your favorite comic book toys.
