When one thinks of important American epicenters for the development and cultivation of comic art, there are a couple that will always spring to mind first. New York is one, of course, as New York City is the undisputed publishing capitol of the country and home to industry giants Marvel and DC. California is certainly another as San Francisco was ground zero for the counterculture movement of the 1960’s and the explosive, unapologetic underground comics that emerged from those politically charged and artistically liberating...

So last Saturday I went to the annual ‘Thought Bubble’ comic convention in Leeds closeby to where I live. This year’s event was the third since it started. I went last year, so this was the second time I’d been to this specific convention, and I’m going to give the lowdown on what happened, and my experiences from the day. It was a long day, let me tell you that!
So the convention opened at 10am, but I did not arrive until bang on midday, as last year I got there at 10 and had seen everything by...

It’s 7:16 AM on America’s birthday. A young John McClane, fresh out of ‘Nam strolls down his beat in a pressed blue uniform. The year is 1976, and John McClane is about to have his first very bad day. When you see the title, “Die Hard,” most of you think yippie ki yay mother fucker, some remember Sam Jackson, some of you younger ones may even remember McClane launch a car into a helicopter (I feel sorry for the young ones).
Whatever memories the title may invoke, Die Hard stands out as one of the finest action film...

It’s a full house for this Pick of the Week, as Simon, Sheldon, Dana and Rob guide you through this week’s best comic books. Sheldon has the pick this time over, and the guys and gal discuss a whole range of other cool comics from hither and thither.
Huge reveals are made between the gang this week though, as Dana reveals a deep secret, and confessess to being a lesbian, after reading far too deeply into a scene in the Outsiders which had no hints to lesbians at all. Also, the boys decided to appoint themselves as...

Many of the best creative endeavors are bound to be short lived. An artist will usually know when he’s said all he has to say before running the risk of going stale or to simply move on to the next phase of his artistic career. This certainly happens in the world of comics and seems to now apply to the brilliant strip The Perry Bible Fellowship by Nicholas Gurewitch.
Describing The Perry Bible Fellowship (which premiered in 2001 and is named after an actual church in Maine) to someone who has not seen it is near impossible...

Goodness me, guess what I’m going to talk to you about this week for Tea Time Thursday? A comic convention that Im going to be attending, and what Im expecting from it compared to my opinions from last years event. Well truthfully, most of you won’t have heard of the UK’s, Thought Bubble comic convention held in Leeds that is opening tomorrow (Saturday 21st).
It’s an annual arts and literature convention, held over 3 days, but on the Saturday of that 3 day period, is when the comic convention is held....

So Film4 here in the UK currently has a whole string of week nights dedicated to Asian films. One night saw me watching a film taken from a hugely popular manga, and that’s pretty much the one for this weeks Manga Monday.
Starting in December 2003 and lasting for 12 volumes, Death Note was a massive success. It follows the story of an extremely intelligent highschool student, know as Light. He finds a black book, a book known as ‘The Death Note’, dropped onto the earth by a God of Death. Light learns that by simply writing...

Hey Comic Impact-ers! Dana checking in. Yesterday Simon and I attended the J.T. Krul signing at Galaxy of Comics and it was a blast. We had a great turn-up of fans and J.T., charismatic as always, was the life of the party. So what were we celebrating? Not only the release of Titans #19 (which if you haven’t picked up, is some of J.T.’s best work) but we also surprised J.T. with early birthday cupcakes.
If you’ve ever met J.T. you know he’s very kind to his fans. He spent a lot of one-on-one time...

Tea Time Thursday strikes once again! Following suit from last week’s review of an #1 comic, I’ve got a corker of an indie comic here that rocked my socks off. We’ll be changing the dials this week and I’m setting the tone to ’sci-fi adventure’.
This week, I read Marc Olivent’s (who I hear has done some 2000AD work over the years) first issue of his own comic series; Seven Sentinels. Marc illustrates and writes these comics, and this series went on for a few issues I gather, and truly...

We don’t don’t know what happened to Comic Film Snob, maybe he got taken out by Kick Ass, but here is the trailer for the movie based on Mark Millar and John Romita Jr’s comic, “Kick Ass.”
I was lucky enough to see a screening of this film with Comic Impact staff members, Rich and Dana and we all agreed that this movie lived up to the amazing book it represents. For more on that, read Rich’s love letter to director Matthew Vaughn . Enjoy the trailer Mother Fuckers!

Dylan Dog is kind of like a cross between movie Constantine and Hellblazer Constantine, with a little bit of Marx Brothers thrown in to spice things up. It’s quirky, at times horrifying and the artwork will confuse and amaze you.
The Cover for Dylan Dog Case Files
The first thing that stood out to me about the book was the size of it. A mammoth 680 pages of comics! Mike Mignola’s cover art (and inserts!!!!) drew me in, and the quick witted dialogue sold me on the whole idea. To be honest, it didn’t hurt that...

For those who read fantasy comics, 2009 is proving itself to truly be a banner year with some of the quality genre material hitting the shops recently. First, there is the amazing continuing series Mouse Guard by David Petersen. Then we saw the phenomenal debut of Cursed Pirate Girl by Jeremy Bastian, which to me still stands as the best, and most beautifully drawn, title of the year. Now there is another comic to add to this imagination abundant list: The Stuff of Legend.
The first issue of The Stuff of Legend (written by...

Hey Impacters! As most of you may know, I am a big Doctor Who fan. So, with the begining of the end of David Tennant as “The Doctor” approaches I wanted to make sure you knew when “The Waters of Mars” will be airing. BBC One will be airing it November 15, 2009 at 7pm but it will not be aired in The U.S. until December 19, 2009 at 9pm. For those of you as anxious as I am to see the episode, and don’t want to wait until December, I would like to remind you there are ALTERNATIVE ways to see it.
So...

According to ComicImpact’s own resident writer, Dana, I should apparantly be watching the EMA’s on MTV I think the station is. Now I probably should be, seen as though Katy Perry (one of my favourite current pop artists!) is hosting, but regardless of whether she is or not, I am here, and I am writing my Tea Time Thursday! Now that is unconditional commitment if you ask me. I joke, of course I’d rather be here writing up a review of a sound comic, than watching some MTV trash, regardless of whether one of my...

Thanks for joining us for the Pick of the Week , on this especially hot week for new comic books! Your pilots for this week’s podcast are Simon, Sheldon and Rob. Dana is still dying, so she’s taking a breather this week. Rob gets the pick this week, and oh boy, does he have a selection to choose from. Infact, this week was pretty heavy on good books for all the guys. So this is one juicy podcast.
You’ll be glad to hear that Rob is always emotional when dogs die, and that he has a caring side when it comes to...

Any comic book artist, be that professional or hobbiest understands how difficult it is trying to make it and fitting into the ‘normal’ world and our geek world together truly is. Comic Party is a manga that focuses on just that.
First let me explain quickly what the Japanese word ‘dōjinshi’ actually means. Well a dōjinshi artist is somebody who draws manga for a hobby or what they do while they are trying to make it famous. Any manga they do produce is often self-published and using the characters of other artist.

Playing fast and loose with histories both real and imagined can be fertile ground for dry comedy and offer opportunities for moments of real poignancy as well. Both are found in abundance in the new chapbook by Francois Ayroles titled Key Moments From The History Of Comics. Presented in a series of single panel cartoons, comic creators from the distant past and the contemporary present are shown in small scenes of inspiration and isolation, melancholy and triumph.
Some of the most affecting pieces in the book are ones that...
