Review: Greek Street #1

Published on July 19th, 2009
greek_street_1I thought I’d put out a review here of Greek Street #1 from Vertigo. It’s been a few weeks since this issue hit shelves, and #2 is bound to be released soon, so better now than never that I state what I thought about this first issue in full detail!

The issue was only $1, so to pass up on buying this would have been simply insane. It’s a full length premiere with just as many pages of story and ads as any comic being published by Vertigo at the moment, so there is seriously NO CATCH with this comic, which a lot of people I assume found hard to believe with it being priced so low. And with a creative team containing the renowned Peter Milligan (writer) and David Gianfelice (artwork), this is not a bunch of up and coming amateurs we’re dealing with here. These guys are good in their field when it comes to comic books! Arguably though, I suppose one could say that the overall pull here was the intensely graphic and mature content within the story.

I have never read anything like this before in a comic book. You have mother/son incest, vast sexual references and a lot of gang violence. But all in all, having said this, they do fit into the plot of the story well and they also fit the genre of story.

The plot is a little confusing so far, but things do get explained as the issue moves forward. The narration works very well with the artwork and the dialogue is ok. This is just one of those comics which will undoubtedly get much better in 2 or 3 issues time when things become clearer.

One tiny problem I had with the book was that it was very hard to tell where it was set until you got to the very end where the policemen were dressed in British Police Gear. For awhile as I was reading through this, I was always wondering where the setting was.

All in all though, for $1, this is one comic you DO NOT WANT TOO MISS, but be aware of the graphic content!  You should be able to find this at your local comic store, as I have mentioned, it did come out a few weeks ago!
