We’re going to shake things week up a bit this week to keep it interesting- below are previews for the books that are on Andy, Sheldon, and Simon’s pull lists for Wednesday (well, books come out on Thursday this week due to Memorial Day, but you know what we mean). Wowza! The best of the best will be highlighted during this week’s POW podcast, and the absolute best book will be featured as the Pick of the Week! Sheldon has the honors this time around. Anyway, think of this preview page as our happy attempt at sparking interest in these titles to fellow comic fans. So check out the list below and leave a comment as to what you plan on picking up this Thursday at your local comic shop!

Amazing Spider-Man #595: Who’s the American Son? What are his ties to the Dark Avengers? And just what does Dark Reign mean for Spider-Man? The answers begin in this issue. As writer Joe Kelly replaces the legendary Mark Waid, and acclaimed artist Phil Jimenez takes over on the pencils. After recent events, Spider-Man’s life is worse than ever and he decides it’s time to save the world…by taking down Norman Osborn, AKA the Iron Patriot and leader of the Dark Avengers. Batman in Barcelona: Dragons Knight: He may have left Spidey, but Mark Waid will be writing a one-shot story about the Dark Knight; When a string of bizarre murders hits Spain’s beautiful coastal city of Barcelona, Batman makes solving this crime his top priority. Full of international intrigue, high adventure and even higher stakes, this story showcases the Caped Crusader ina  different type of Gotham – but one no less dangerous! (Andy)

Final Crisis Aftermath: Ink #1: The Tattooed Man is considered a hero for the first time in his life. At first, the rewards from his new lifestyle are a welcome change from the rest of what his existence has been, but soon the pressure to stay above temptation and evil start to wear him down. Matters are quickly complicated when he wakes up in the middle of the night to find his body covered in unfamiliar tattoos that seem to have a life of their own. (Andy: So far these Aftermath books have been solid. I expect no less from Ink.)

futurama43Futurama Comics #43: Fry finds himself short on cash, so he moonlights for a company that specializes in selling products to people while they sleep. But when Fry finds himself in the middle of one of Leela’s dreams, he decides to do everything in his power to make her dream come true. (Andy: Wasn’t this an episode?)

Gotham Gazette: Batman Alive #1: A city looking to rise up. A new Dark Knight is casting his shadow until dawn’s early light. A cop looking to solve a murder whose solution may be worse than the crime. A reporter who can reclaim her social standing only by rejecting everything she believes in. A doctor who has found new life by compromising her old one. One hero who has determined a course of action no matter whose plans it spoils. Harvey Bullock. Vicki Vale. Dr. Leslie Thompkins. Stephanie Brown. These four ordinary people living extraordinary lives look to regain their balance in a city that turns lives upside down. Morning comes to Gotham City and the time for mourning has passed. How do the people of Gotham City deal with the sudden arrival of hope? (Andy: Did any of you read Gotham Gazette: Batman Dead #1? It was pretty good, so I hope this one is too.)

Green Lantern #41: The truth behind the eternally corrupt Vega System is finally revealed and the Green Lantern Corps will pay dearly for uncovering the secret. Meanwhile, the greed of Agent Orange knows no bounds as his demand for the universe explodes. Plus, Hal continues to struggle with the abilities of his new power ring. (Andy/Simon/Sheldon)

Last Days of Animal Man #1: Is Buddy Baker losing it all? Everyman hero Buddy Baker has fought hard for our world, and for his family. But by the year 2024, the Earth has seen better days: The heroes are growing tired, the villains have grown nastier and Buddy’s own hometown of San Diego has struggled for years to recover from a cataclysmic typhoon. His children have grown and his marriage has gotten colder… and now, as San Diego faces the most vicious Super-Villain it’s seen in years, his powers are starting to fail him! Without his powers, without his family – who is Buddy Baker? Can he still be a husband? Can he still be a father? Can he still be Animal Man? And more importantly, can he even survive the bloodthirsty plan his arch-rival’s progeny has in store for him? (Andy: I know absolutely nothing about Animal Man, so I’m intrigued.)

The Literals #2: Even with his two Fable muses pressed into service, Kevin Thorn is having trouble getting started on his next grand opus. He seems to be suffering from a bad case of, ‘What’s that malady that affects writers and keeps them from getting their work done?’ Meanwhile, the Page Sisters go to guns a-blazin’ against the Genres. Muppet Robin Hood #1: The Muppets tell the Robin Hood legend for laughs, and it’s the reader who will be merry! Robin Hood (Kermit the Frog) and his band of outlaws steal from the rich and give to the poor. But much to the Merry Men’s disbelief, Maid Marian (Miss Piggy) has stolen Robin’s most valuable possession-his heart! (Andy: Holy shit this sounds ridiculous!)

New Avengers #53: Who will be the next Sorceror Supreme? And will he or she survive the initiation? The Avengers fight a battle that they know will shape the future of the Marvel Universe for years to come! (Simon/Sheldon)


Runaways #10: When Runaway Molly Hayes responds to the X-Men’s psychic invitation welcoming all mutants to a new home in San Francisco, she declares it ‘Moll-ifest Destiny’ and heads to the Headlands to investigate! But when she finds herself back-to-back with Wolverine, cornered by a villain with a vendetta, she might find being an X-Man isn’t just secret clubhouses and cool-looking costumes… (Andy: Finally! The Runaways and the X-Men!)

Star Wars Legacy #36: Gar Stazi’s Galactic Alliance fleet joins forces with deposed Emperor Roan Fel’s Imperials in a strike against the Sith Empire. Stazi has his work cut out for him — not only must he hold together the shaky coalition, but he has to make sure that the allies do not lower themselves to their enemies’ tactics! (Andy)

Superman #688: Mon-El’s role as Superman’s stand-in for Metropolis is threatened by a sudden and mysterious power loss. How can he be the hero he needs to be without any special abilities? Meanwhile the Guardian and his Science Police go to the rescue of a missing member of the Legion of Superheroes. And who is the spy within the Science Police ranks? (Simon)

Teen Titans #71: The team picks up the pieces following their crossover with Titans and Vigilante as Ravager returns. But is she friend or foe? (Andy: Ravager kicks ass.)

Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk #6: With his mission a wreck and Fury hot on his trail, can Wolverine pull himself together (literally & figuratively!!) to do what he does best before Hulk pounds him into oblivion first? Don’t miss this explosive final chapter as the battle between Berserker and Behemoth goes to ELEVEN! (Andy/Simon-Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk #5 was my POW so let’s hope this books ends with a BAM !!)

Usagi Yojimbo #120: There’s no calm after the storm for the rabbit ronin as Usagi grapples with the fallout from ‘Traitors of the Earth’ and uncovers a new mystery. While Kitsune recovers from her encounter with the wizard Hatakeyama, her protege Kiyoko, works to keep money coming in, using the performance and pickpocket lessons Kitsune has taught her. Hiding from the police in an abandoned temple, Kiyoko overhears a plot to murder a rich merchant. She tries to get Usagi involved, but there’s not much he can do when the merchant doesn’t want help, and it’s still not clear who wants the merchant dead, anyway. (Simon)

War Machine #6: When Jim Rhodes returns home he comes face-to-face with American Eagle, last seen in the pages of Thunderbolts—as two visions of America clash with earth-shattering results that may irrevocably change War Machine—and the nation he loves! Also: What the heck does Rhodes’ mom have to say about all of this? (Simon)


Wolverine #72: Logan and Hawkeye have finally reached their journey’s end, made it to New Babylon, and delivered Hawkeye’s secret cargo. But the completion of their mission has come with a great price…and Logan is out for revenge on the man responsible for the annihilation of the world’s super heroes, the President of the United States! Wolverine First Class #15: Kitty Pryde’s got a crush, and she’s depending on Wolvie to help her get the hook-up. But what can she really expect him to do when that crush is Thor!? (Andy)

Wolverine Origins #36: Wolverine races to stop Daken from undergoing the procedure that will turn him into the ultimate weapon! But will saving his son’s life cost him his own? Nothing lasts forever… (Andy)

X-Force #15: As Stryfe gets even closer to learning the secret of Hope Summers, Bishop has no choice but to make his move. X-Force has split into two strike teams… but only betrayal and death await them. And the choice Archangel makes will change everything. Plus, the battle a millennia in the making: Cable vs. Stryfe! X-Men Legacy #224: Rogue and Gambit fans, DO NOT MISS THIS ISSUE! The status quo is shaken and the effects of the final reckoning between Danger and Xavier are felt! (Andy: With a billing like this, something monumental had better happen./Simon)
