Cosplay Girl of the Month April 2009
One of the features we do here at Comic Impact is the cosplay girl of the month. Find how something that was accident became more then that for Maurynna as she talks to us about her love of Emma Frost the White Queen and her self-designed movie costume and a lot more as we give you the Comic Impact readers April’s cosplay girl.
1.What is your name ?
Maurynna Kyrissean
2.How old are you?
23
3.Do you read comics and if so what do you like to read ?
Yes! I love to read Astonishing X-Men and Invincible Iron Man.
4. What is your favorite comic book character ?
As much as I would like to say Emma Frost, I’ll have to go with Batman and Iron Man as tied. I just love how in a world where one must have a superpower in order to be considered a superhero, they can still make a name for themselves simply because of what they can imagine, design, and create with their intelligence. Being playboy millionaires doesn’t hurt them either in my book!
5. What are your favorite artist or writer ?
My favorite artist would have to be Greg Land and my favorite writer would have to be Greg Pak, simply because of the masterpiece they created when they worked on X-Men: Phoenix - Endsong together.
6. What got you into cosplay ?
It was actually an accidental event. At the time I was very interested in Japanese animation (anime) and I knew there were Star Trek conventions so I decided to look online to see if there were anime conventions, so I typed “anime convention” into Yahoo. The first result was Otakon which was in Baltimore, Maryland which was only an our away from me at that time.
There was a random picture on the lower right corner of the website of a person dressed in a costume and I thought, “Oh wow that looks like so much fun!” So I decided to dress up as Sailor Moon in a really crappy $50 outfit I found online. It was then that I realized I needed to start making my own outfits and so I did. However, I quickly grew out of the anime phase and transitioned into comic books, whereas I then changed from anime conventions to comic cons and began to create and wear comic-inspired costumes instead.
7.If you do more then one character which one is your favorite and if do only one do you have some ideas for more costumes? If so what is it
N/a
8.How long does it take for you to make a costume?
It depends on three factors: the difficulty level of the costume, how much spare time I have outside of work and school, and how much money I have to purchase materials. For example, my White Queen uniform took me a little under a week to make because it was a rather easy costume, I had a lot of spare time, and I had money to spare.
However, my self-designed movie Emma Frost took me almost a year to make because the design was rather difficult, I was rather busy, and I did not have a lot of money to work with so I had to slowly buy the material before I could start sewing and such.
9.Have you meet any of the artist or writer that your costume is base on there work ?
No not yet, unfortunately.
10.Do you buy any toys, bust and etc base on some of your favorite costume?
I own a few Astonishing X-Men Emma Frost busts and figures, though I rarely use figures or busts as a reference because sometimes the details are messed up or added on to make it look more pleasing to the eye.
11.So do people know you dress up like a comic book hero on your free time ?
The majority of the people I know do, along with my entire family. The only place I rarely speak of it is at work.
12.What is the funniest think that has happen to you at a convention ?
I think it would have to have been at Wizard World Chicago 2007. I was walking down the street to McDonalds to get some lunch and I was wearing my White Queen costume as I did this. Obviously the drivers didn’t know what was going on and all of a sudden I heard this awful squealing noise so I looked over to see a car accident occurring on the street almost right next to me. Apparently the driver was too busy staring at me that he smacked into the rear-end of the car in front of him that was stopped at the red light.
13.Do kids come up to you and think you are the real life character?
Yes and I think it is so adorable. On Free Comic Book Day 2008, a girl around the age of six or seven came up to me and her eyes were lit up and she was smiling from ear to ear, and in her hands was a piece of scrap paper and a pen and she goes, “Miss Frost, can I have your autograph?” I was stunned and flattered all at the same time so I personalized a message to her and signed “Emma Frost.” She was so happy!
14.What do you like to do when you’re not costuming such as other hobbies ?
I love to sew as a hobby, just to make clothes for myself and such. I also play World of Warcraft, enjoy a book now and then, and like to go on walks.
15.Great do you have a website or a myspace ? So people can contact you ?
You can find me on MySpace at http://www.myspace.com/shardsofdiamonds
Thanks you one more time Maurynna.
