Welcome to in theory what is the very last Pick Of The Week podcast of the year! As next week there is only one comic. So join our internationally challenged friends Simon, Sheldon, Rob and Dana for what is probably one of the most outrageous and unorthodox episodes of the year! Believe you me, stuff happened last week!
Rob’s got the pick this week, and is joined my multi-national friends Sheldon from Scotland, and Simon from France (or is it Russia?). Dana is just her good usual self this week, but shes with the team giving...

Your regularly scheduled programming (the Sequential Sunday column) will not be seen (or read) this week as I would like to take this time to thank all of our Comic Impact readers for making 2009 such a great year. I hope everyone has had the happiest of holidays, got what they wanted for Christmas, and did not see the following scenario in their house when Santa came calling…
I wish everyone nothing but the very best in the coming year. Your comments and feedback on Sequential Sunday have been greatly appreciated and I look...

Hey folks, welcome back to Tea Time Thursday, and its Christmas Eve as you know, unless you are a mole and weren’t aware. I guess this is therefore the Tea Time Thursday ‘Christmas Special’! So yes, as I’ve promised this interview for a long time, I won’t ramble for too long. I hope you enjoy this interview I got with Time Bomb Comics founder and writer, Steve Tanner, when I caught up with him at the Leeds Thought Bubble convention earlier this November.

The things that you will see on the pages of a Brandon Graham comic are unusual and daring. The panels are jaggedly laid out across the page, there is writing everywhere, but the world feels so alive. Brandon’s characters feel alive, emotionally and artistically.
I wanted to find out what kind of person it takes to make these pages happen. No run of the mill artist puts that much work into a panel, especially not for a monthly run issue series (see: Walking Dead #68, and Captain America Reborn #5). Why do Brandon’s...

I was lucky enough to see a screening of this film with Comic Impact staff members, Rich and Dana and we all agreed that this movie lived up to the amazing book that it is base on.
Don’t ask me when the next issue of Kick Ass is coming out. But I can tell you from the screening we saw you will fall in love with Hit-Girl I know we all did. She is the star of the film.
The story of Kick-Ass goes something like this: comic book fanboy Dave Lizewski decides to become a hero to save New York city from the real bad guys- street...

Bryan Singer signed on to direct X-Men: First Class…What should happen(doesn’t mean it will)
When I first heard the news of Bryan Singer, director of the first two X-men movies, was returning to helm the next in the franchise, I was immediately feeling hopeful. You gotta admit, we had a good franchise going until Brett Ratner came along and retooled possibly one of Marvel’s 5 greatest story arcs in their history, (The beloved Phoenix Saga) to look more like a Rush Hour sequel. Seriously, if it ain’t...

Nobody likes being the last person to show up at a party, and boy do I feel like I’m the last person to show up at this one. I consider myself an avid fan of all things horror since childhood, but I have to admit that until now I have not read the incredible Image comic The Walking Dead. But like a straggler at a blowout drinking fast to be on everyone else’s fuzzy wavelength, I am attempting to make up for lost time. In the last week or so I have read all ten of the currently available trade paperback collections of The...

I begin with a simple premise: Science Fiction is harder to do in literature, movies and television than straight drama.
Why? Doctors, lawyers and police have inherent drama we all know an understand on a visceral level.
Science Fiction posits “what ifs” and world’s that don’t exist. Where do you begin and how do you make it believable? Two series I follow are “Heroes” and “Smallville” They both deal with “what if” as opposed to “what is. Watching...

When I go to pick up my comics next week on Christmas Eve, I can tell you that out of the reasonably meaty list of comics I’ll be getting, the one I will be most looking forward to reading is a brand new one shot from Dark Horse Comics, called ‘Hellboy: The Bride of Hell’.
As a particular fan of Mike Mignola’s fantastic Hellboy Universe, I always look forward to most books published that tell tales from within his universe, be it B.P.R.D, Lobster Johnson or Hellboy himself. The previous Hellboy one shot...

So here it is, the trailer that made me change my pants while I was working at the comic shop. Sure, it’s only a small, less than three minute tease, but if the movie is anything like this…All us fans of Shell Head are in for a HUGE treat. I mean, who doesn’t love The Iron Man cheerleaders? This is only part of the fun in this trailer.
Take a look at the circled content in this image. Could this be Titanium Man/Crimson Dynamo? I know, from an inside source, there was a suit made for him for the first movie that...

Since writing my last Sequential Sunday entry about the supremely talented artist Mark Schultz, I have been giving much thought to his influences and what the work of those artists have meant to me as well. The name that kept entering my mind the most, one whose work I’ve admired since childhood, is that of Al Williamson. Even though Williamson has had a long and highly esteemed career spanning several decades, the work of his that invariably jumps to my mind is the one that I was exposed to first - his comic book movie adaptations,...

When one thinks of important American epicenters for the development and cultivation of comic art, there are a couple that will always spring to mind first. New York is one, of course, as New York City is the undisputed publishing capitol of the country and home to industry giants Marvel and DC. California is certainly another as San Francisco was ground zero for the counterculture movement of the 1960’s and the explosive, unapologetic underground comics that emerged from those politically charged and artistically liberating...

Many of the best creative endeavors are bound to be short lived. An artist will usually know when he’s said all he has to say before running the risk of going stale or to simply move on to the next phase of his artistic career. This certainly happens in the world of comics and seems to now apply to the brilliant strip The Perry Bible Fellowship by Nicholas Gurewitch.

Any comic book artist, be that professional or hobbiest understands how difficult it is trying to make it and fitting into the ‘normal’ world and our geek world together truly is. Comic Party is a manga that focuses on just that.
First let me explain quickly what the Japanese word ‘dōjinshi’ actually means. Well a dōjinshi artist is somebody who draws manga for a hobby or what they do while they are trying to make it famous. Any manga they do produce is often self-published and using the characters of other artist.

Playing fast and loose with histories both real and imagined can be fertile ground for dry comedy and offer opportunities for moments of real poignancy as well. Both are found in abundance in the new chapbook by Francois Ayroles titled Key Moments From The History Of Comics. Simon is more into word balloons in the all new Comic by A. J. Lieberman call Cowboy Ninja Viking # 1. Both boys agree on their love of Iron Man and can’t wait for Stark Disassembled. The guys also...

The undisputed master of the Japanese horror manga genre is Kazuo Umezu. Born in 1936, Umezu is part of the generation of artists and writers who grew up in the wake of the devastating atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki followed by the humiliating defeat of Japan in WWII. The generational shell-shock of these events undeniably shaped the future of their work and served as the starting point for what is now the massive Japanese pop culture landscape.
Although he had started producing manga while still in high school,...

It’s that time of year again, when ghosts and goblins come out and mingle with us mortals. When we gorge on candy and other goodies. The time of year that gets us excited for the latest contest here at ComicImpact. Thats right, ladies and gentlemen, it’s the official Comic Impact Halloween Costume Contest. The rules are simple.
1. Wear your favorite comic book theme costume on Halloween.
2. Print out a “Comic Impact Halloween” logo

So, my children of the night, you have decided to join me for yet another Tea Time Thursday have you now? Well then, prepare to meet you maker, mwahaha! I really need to stop doing such lame introductions. But regardless, yes, as are more than likely aware, that if you’re reading this, then you are here for a reason, and that is too read my review of Punks In Space #3! If you arn’t here for that, then you are probably on drugs and should go take some more or whatever, as this won’t interest you while you’re...

Simon said he was getting an interview, and Matt said he was just shooting footage for the site, but I knew better.
No doubt, Lady Deadpool was foxy, but make sure you check out the other costumed crusaders from Long Beach.
When our impromptu shoot was over, we gathered our thoughts over pizza and planned our moves for the next day. Deciding that no time should be wasted, I grabbed the awesome Michael Alan Nelson for my very first video interview evar! (09, a year of firsts for me I guess).
Michael was so interesting. Here...

Kicking Trade Tuesday back off (hopefully to a flying start) this week, I, Rob, aim to review the first trade paper back of a recently revived series from Marvel Comics, one which I feel would put an extra twenty years of life back into any octogenarian, by just reading it. Although not a proven belief, I still believe it would do just that, so back off, or at least back off so far that you walk yourself into your local comic store and pick yourself up a copy of Guardians Of The Galaxy: Legacy.
Legacy is the first trade paper...

Iconic mangas are those that have stood the test of time. They are known by everyone (even if they haven’t read it), are constantly cosplayed, respected and above all have avoided fading into obscurity with the million other mangas that have been and gone.
Cowboy Bebop has managed to do just that, with its amazing mash-up of film noir, sci-fi, beautiful women, danger, Jazz and out right weird.
Cowboy Bebop is set in the year 2071 and finds itself set in outterspace after an explosion from a warp gate experiment results in daily...

Join Dana and Simon as they go over the best comics of October 14th 2009. Rob and Sheldon are missing in action this week, Rob seems to be fancying a deer and Sheldon…well you’ll find out why he was missing below. The dynamic duo discuss everything from a galaxy far far away to magic reborn…
Star Wars Invasion #0, had Simon perplexed since #5 is due out in a few weeks. Blackest Night Batman #3 might just have a connection between ice and white lanterns. Is there a possible romance between Red Robin and...

With Halloween right around the corner and all the spooky connotations that come with it hanging in the air it seemed like a good time to scour the shelves of my favorite comic book store for some seasonally appropriate material. The store in question is Comics Factory in Pasadena, CA where, if you’re an indie reader like me, you’re in luck as their selection of independents is so wide it almost rivals all the stock of the Big Two put together. Another huge plus for my ghoulish spree is that there seems to be more horror...

“Halt!”
We complied with the command and the Stormtrooper centered his blaster on us. My friend got a bit jittery and the Stormtrooper put him in cuffs. This is how we ended up at the booth for the 501st Legion, and that’s where I met their leader, Scott Allen. He gave me his card, which featured him in full costume as the Dark Father himself.
I learned a lot about the 501st, mostly that they weren’t out to destroy the galaxy. Turns out they have a ton of divisions, all geared toward charity. Their upcoming...

The Lowdown: If you’re looking for a continuing narrative, this is not the book for you, however if you are a history buff that likes a good twist you may want to run to the store for this one.
Max Brooks is famous for many things, almost all of them zombie related. This book continues in that same vein, helping to add to the world he has created in an intriguing way. When you pick up Recorded Attacks, it doesn’t feel the way a comic ought to. There is no real narrative, no real dialogue even. Most of the book is...

It’s really hard for me to write about things I like. I feel like it’s easier to talk about things that are wrong with a book. My first start of this review read “this book is neat, i really think you should read it.” In truth, that’s gonna be the heart of this review but I’m going to try to elaborate just a bit more.
For those of you not in the know, Soulfire is a comic about the resurgence of magic in the year 2211. It’s one of Michael Turner’s great contributions to the world...

Now us comic book types, be that manga or otherwise, are often stereotyped to not liking sports and in fact, being rather allergic to exercise all together. So I thought this manga would be perfect. Not only is it sports based but it is a Japanese manga that is based off an American sport. Football.
Eyesheild 21 is a pretty big manga, concluded at a hefty 37 volumes, had a successful anime in Japan and even had a spin off TCG (trading card game) and video games. While American football seems to be an odd choice, even more so...

When we left off, I was wrapping up my first meeting with Jason Gonzalez, a colorist for Todd McFarlane’s Spawn.
Livesay stepped up to the booth and I finally got to speak with him. He seemed a bit more interested in taking commissions than talking to yours truly, but I got a chance to get his top 3 reading recommendations! He plugged his own book, Doom Patrol, but also suggested Punisher and Dark Avengers.
I bothered him about his inking work, mainly looking for insight to his process. He explained that an inker...

I would later be told that this was what a con should be.
I was sitting outside and waiting to hear from Simon, my contact within. It was Saturday morning and I was full of spunk, the purity that comes with the excitement of the unknown. Somewhere inside the Long Beach Convention Center were artists and writers that I’d have to interview, minds I’d have to get inside of, and I had no idea what to say to any of them.
When I was done skulking around the outskirts I decided to join the party. Coming down the escalator...

We also talked about his recent trip to Australia and the yummy kangaroo meat he ate. Oh and I can’t forget the Moon Pies!!

All these things and more in the time from now until San Diego Comic Con 2010. The one thing you can’t do is buy your pass for preview night. Hey everyone. I hope you are all well, and I hope you’ve all had a somewhat less hectic past 2 weeks as I certainly have. Goodness me, firstly let me appologise for my incapability to put out a TTT last week, I was having a little bit of a hard time being swamped with University application nonsense, it believe me, it takes time if you’re someone like me who finds it hard to multitask.

Now that it’s been a few days since the end of the first annual Long Beach Comic-Con I’d thought I’d chirp in with some thoughts on the event. Firstly, it took place in the clean n’ cheery part of Long Beach as opposed to the “run, motherfucker, run!” areas which would have been not only an odd choice of locales, but potentially a complete disaster for us sensitive artistic types.
An entire afternoon passed in Long Beach and no one had to use their A-K. Today was a good day.
I was happy to see many independent publishers...

The Long Beach Comic Con is everything a con should be. It was sizable without being overly large, busy without being overbearing, and most importantly, kept it’s focus on comic books. Simon and I were both reminded of the San Diego Comic Con fifteen years ago, where there was plenty of things to see without the annoying crowds, humongous lines, and the loud presence of video game and motion picture booths (although both were present at Long Beach).
In my years of going to cons, I’ve found that there are two...

There’s something fascinating about seeing your favorite hero doing what they do best, but in a radically altered setting or environment. A big favorite of mine as a kid was What If? from Marvel. In (somewhat) more recent years it’s a real kick to see what DC creators do with the various Elseworlds releases. One that always springs to mind is Gotham By Gaslight in which we see what Batman would be like if he lived and operated in the late 1800’s. Pretty far-out to be sure, but how is the reader to react upon seeing the...
